I am planning out my garage for a new build. I plan on working on my cars, tractor and UTV in this garage. Which would be the best way to go? A lift, if that is even possible with a tractor considering how back heavy it is, or a mechanic's pit?

FYI. Tractor (Kioti DK6010SE + filled tires) is probably around 5,000 lbs but I may eventually upgrade to 100hp + tractor.

Really isn't to much need for a tractor. Usually they split. Found that out after I got mine.
That being said I like my two post because when not being used I can park under something else that is on the lift

A good 4 post lift should be able to handle your tractor.

Pits seem to have fallen out of favor, but certainly would be good if you get anything heavier. It would take a mighty big lift to budge my CAT 977, but I will probably only use that for building a future shop, and then may sell it.

I suppose that would also apply the commercial truck world.

Can you put in a pit? I can't help but feel like I read a long while back those are frowned upon by some environmental government organization.

I don't remember why I'm thinking that, which is frustrating, but I would love a pit myself and someone once put a pin in that bubble.

Lift. So many un-anticipated things you can do with a lift other than lifting vehicles. I used the arms to install fluid filled tires onto my tractor which was parked on jack stands, pull a stubborn PTO shaft apart I even store my spare lawnmower on it. Get at least a 10k capacity unit. You do need higher trength flooring to support the loads, but what else is a pit good for ? At least the lift can be raised fully up empty and you have a continuous floor. As for the pit, maybe a hot tub or place to drown chipmunks and squirrels.

What do you mean by 'split' ?

As for parking underneath I thought about that. Would be great unless whatever is on the lift has a leak.

I'd go with a two post lift. It is more versatile than a four post though you should have six inches of concrete under the posts. You can raise a vehicle all the way but part way works well for rotating tires. I think 10,000 is about optimal for most cars and pickup trucks. And you can't accidentally drive into it or have somebody fall into it.

This is pretty cool. Prevent the 'falling in' and having to climb stairs in and out.

Typically for any major repair on tractor transmission you have to split (separate) the engine from the transmission and or pull an axle off the transmission. Both of which a pit would be of little to no value and possibly a hindrance.

Check for local restrictions on pits. Many locations ban them since they are a fall risk if left uncovered.

I was not permitted to install one when I built my garage. I chose a 4 post Bendpak lift instead and don't regret the choice.

There are no issues with rear heavy tractors and they are great for storage when not being used.

So much so that I installed one in another building just for that purpose.
