looking to get one to tow behind my rtv 1140, I dont know anything about them like what brands suck and such.. just looking for some direction. it will need to be heavy duty, I have alot of wood. just a bad shoulder so no more hand splitting.

i know this is the RTV forum but i didnt really see anything for log splitters.. and advice is appreciated.

Don't know the brand, but my Mom's friend bought one from TSC 3 years ago and beats it senseless ( heats his house full time with wood). I think he paid $1100 or so for it. One line O ring went bad so far, that's it.

There are commercial duty ones out there, but you need to to a cost benefit on that one.

He pulls it around with a Cub S-CUT, so an 1100 series RTV would drag it everywhere.

I have had a Speeco/Husky 34 ton for years, they have cut corners and cheapened them since but they are a whole lot better then the MTD clones. Have done up to 48 inch Doug fir and over 34 inch maple.

If you have a bad shoulder, I would recommend finding a splitter with a log lift of some kind (See: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/114237-building-hydraulic-log-lift-splitter.html for some examples). They make life SOOO much easier even if you dont have any slowdowns.

i bought a craftsman i think it's a 24 ton and it's been trucking along for 3 years now.i split over 30 truck loads of wood so far with no problems.i would sugets a lifter if you have a bad shoulder but if you put the splitter in a vertical position you should be fine.i sit on my little foot stool and split my wood because of my neck and back condition.

I have a Splitfire I tow behind my Ranger 700. Works very well. Solid machine with trailer lights and hi-speed wheel bearings so can be towed on roads when required. Splitter works in both directions and can be two or four blade configured.

thanks for the advice on the lifter.. definitely going to check that out.

I found a speeco 34 ton one local for around 1750. has a briggs and straton engine so it should be decent. havent bought it yet though.
