Looking for source for seals

Hi all,

I find myself looking for various seals for various applications. Other than the manufacturer of the item being fixed (sometime item is so old they don't carry parts anymore), do you have any suggestions as to where I can find seals? Typically shaft seals, for things like gearboxes with shafts that protrude out or the like.

I'm guessing there are sources out there, just not sure where to look.

If you have the numbers off the old seals a bearing supply or NAPA can usually cross them to a replacement.

most seals can be matched generically knowing lip style, ID, OD and thickness, at a reputable bearing supply house. "possibly' even at a napa.. but I wouldn't lay any bets on them anymore..

Motion Industries is a fairly large supply house that carries bearings, seals, belts, etc.. Not sure if they offices in your area or not.

Anytime I deal with bearings and/or Seals, I try to do it by part # or by size/type.

Timken/national and SKF/cr both have good cross-reference sites as well as a search-by-size feature where you input the bore diameter, shaft diameter and seal thickness.

However you go about it thoguh, get a part number. Once you have that you are set. Most auto parts stores like napa, autozone, oriley, advance, etc can search by that PN. (or you can do it on their website).

Other times, when I needed a seal for my ford BH, I got the national PN. Ford dealer didnt have any. Parts stores didnt have any. BUT, I was also able to cross that ober (through timkens site) to a JD number. But the deere dealer didnt have any either so..... But the point was, if they had them, I could have bought parts at the deere dealer for my ford backhoe IF the had them.

Also, napaonline.com is pretty good at interchanging when you have an OEM number, like for a truck or tractor. "their" number I believe is a national number.

Thank you very much guys, I did not even think of the seal's (non-swimming and nose-balancing type) part number. I should've thought of that as I did that when doing wheel bearings for an old trailer. All the links are also greatly appreciated. I need to pull the fan off of the blower as the imediate need is for a seal to the shaft running the shaft that runs the chain drive to the auger on my snow blower. I just fitted to my tractor, built up a chute turning handle set up and then went to change the gearbox oil and there was none, filled and it all came out through the shaft seal. Thank goodness I caught early as the machine runs smooth. I am not looking forward to trying to get the fan off, I've had bad experiences with that in the past.

Check yor old seals for numbers also as most sae seals will use a part # and metric seals will have the dimensions imprinted on them. (ex. 40x52x8 =id x od x thickness in milimeters)

you can also get seals by ID/OD/thickness for most applications
