Last week my 9 year old Bassett Hound, Frasier, was on his last leg with a failing liver. Two weeks before the vet said to take him home and enjoy his last few weeks. By last Friday he couldn't walk more than 15 ft without having to lay down and rest for 10 minutes.
We put him in the car and took him to the vets to have him put down. I stopped in town and looked the back seat. He had moved and was almost off the seat and on the floor, I parked and opened the door to help him into a more comfortable position. He looked up at me,let out his last breath and died.
It was almost like he knew how upset I was at having to put him down and he didn't want to put me through it.
