I recently bought a bigger excavator at auction and I'm seeing lots of black smoke out the exhaust when I'm under load. I'm thinking it's probably the turbo but, curious if you guys have other ideas? It still has decent power, I'm able to dig with it and yank trees out of the ground, it doesn't really bog down, just smokes. At idle, it sounds a little like it's got a hot cam in it also, kind of lopes. Any thoughts?

I'll say it's bigger ! Perfect size homeowner machine! Is it using any oil ? Check your air filters if you haven't, have seen that issue with plugged filters. How many hours on her ? I would think a bad turbo would provide other issues !

Black smoke is usually too much fuel or not enough air. I would check the air filter first.

Also could be that someone turned the fuel up on the injector pump. My dad was bad about that on the farm tractors we had. Those things would smoke like a freight train in a hard pull. They did it day in and day out without an issue.

It could be a stuck open injector as well...

If it allows, do a contribution test.

I removed the air filter, it definitely needs to be cleaned or replaced but, even without it I got the smoke. I could hear the turbo spooling nicely with the air filter out though, doesn't mean it's not bad. I haven't pulled the intake off to check it for play yet.

Turned up fuel is definitely a possibility, this machine started life with an EGR and DPF so, I shouldn't be seeing any smoke, no matter what. I'm guessing that someone coded them out and cored the DPF, which is fine with me I don't think that stuff belongs on construction equipment anyway.

I don't have the Volvo computer to run a contribution test. An injector makes sense also.

I did check for blow by, BTW, I don't see any.

I've got someone scheduled to come out Friday, an independent tech, not a Volvo guy. Hopefully he'll have a way to test injectors without pulling them. I'd like to get this figured out before he gets here, if it is just the turbo, I'll probably cancel him and do it myself.

Could be Injector issues. Check your clamps on your turbo plumbing, too. Overfueled or under aired

Might be a bad or misused tune then?

Pretty easy to see if DPF is cored (as long as it's easily accessible)
