This information may help someone else out there. My 4500 would not shift well into reverse. It started with about 700 hours on the machine. At first it would grind a little, after a few months, it would not shift into reverse at all. Not good for a machine we use almost everyday. Removed the trans. cover to look things over and what stood out was the wear on the reverse sincro. An email to Mahindra help line confirmed that this was almost certainly the problem. The 2 "near by" dealers felt I needed a new clutch, installed for almost $3K! Splitting the tractor was more than I cared to tackle but I no longer have confidence in the dealers, so what to do? I'm a welder by trade. I VERY carefully spotted the 3 tabs on the sincro and things have worked fine for over a year. (if you want to know the details, post your email and I will try to get back to you). My guess is that the reverse sincro tends to hammer around due to the vibrations of the diesel and the tabs wear off. Is it a common problem? I don't know. I have added a Lucas product to the gear oil. Which brings up a question..... on cold days, after starting, I put the reverser in gear, low range, and leave the shifter in neutral. There is a LOT of drag due to the heavy oil, so this gets it moving and I hope everything is getting lubed up. Anyone see a problem in doing this?
