I am getting ready to do the 250 hour service on my 1710 TLB. When doing the hydraulic fluid, how do you ensure you drained the fluid from the FEL and the Backhoe? My understanding is that the hydrostatic and the loader and backhoe use the same fluid pressure system, so it seems to do a full change you need to get the fluid out of the backhoe and FEL....maybe I am just misunderstanding this or maybe it does not matter leaving some amount in the system.

THanks

Generally, you just don't drain the loader and backhoe, and the old oil in there will eventually mix with the fresh stuff you're tossing into the tractor. It's an imperfect world!

ok, thanks. That is what I suspected but was not sure. I wanted to make sure i got enough fluid from the dealer so basically will just need what the tractor manual says it hold.

You will be adding hyd oil to any hydraulically operated attachment you use, and depending on the cylinder extension, leaving more or less oil in the attachment. It is a good idea to have extra hydraulic oil on hand for top-up. Also, very few people have used exactly the specified amount of hydraulic oil during an oil change, don't expect that precision.

That said, send a sample to a reputable oil analysis lab (I use Blackstone; there are others), and explain you want to keep using the same oil. Hydraulic oil leads a much easier life than crankcase oil; it may not be necessary to change the oil. The $30 or so cost of the analysis is short money compared to the cost of the hydraulic oil. Do change the filters as that is where the contaminants collect.

About the best you can do is before draining hyd oil make sure all hyd cyls/ram are pulled back/retracted inside the casing that will empty the tubes the best they can.

this is what I did on the 1710 I used. I put it up on 2 sets of same height wheel ramps for room to drains and filters underneath. lowered bucket all the way down and curled up all the way. backhoe swung one direction (whatever one closes ram iirc towards rt side tractor) then stuck boom all the way up in air to collapse them.
drain, fill warm and circulate fluid, recheck. almost always had to add a bit on checking.
