Massey 210_Starter issues...

Just joined, so here goes. Massey 210 starter would "click" sometimes, but would engage if I put it in a tall gear and rocked it with the clutch out. I'm no mechanic, and it seemed to me to be a dead spot in the starter if there is such a thing. Had starter off the tractor 2 years ago to a reputable guy who said it was fine. Have limped along with occasional click ever since. Now though, I get zero, but SOMETIMES will start OK. Battery's good, took all the connections loose at the starter and cleaned them as well as battery leads. Is there an electrical component like a voltage regulator or such under the dash I could check? Has to be something simple, but I'm ready to kill myself-drives me crazy!! The starter on my MF1010 sounds like a similar issue, I have not tried the tall gear rocking... Are you meaning you are bump starting it in this manner, or just a process after which you can get it to start normally? I wasn't clear on that part, but am willing to try! Thanks and I look forward to other input.
