I have a 2004 $WD 1428V and the Front Left wheel is leaking fluid at the swivel point where the part that goes down inserts into the horizontal shaft. The manual shows a seal for the "Final Case" so it appears you have to drop the whole assembly down. They are very sketchy on the "how" part. They say "remove the final case from the axel end" then "remove the cap and snap ring" then "remove the wheel gear", and then "remove the snap ring and drive out the wheel shaft with a plastic hammer". Then, at this stage, the wheel shaft oil seal can be checked. Seems straight forward, and I had this done at local Massey shop, but they went rogue and don't do them anymore, so, anyone have suggestions, tips or tricks? Done auto stuff in the past, just prepping for this adventure.

Its very simple and will make sense when you pull it apart. The seal itself is a 2 piece seal - there is an inner sleeve that fits on the shaft and then a rubber seal that seals against the sleeve. You will likely destroy the "cap" or plug when removing it so you will need to replace that too. Basically its a rubber coated dust plug.

OK, thank you, I am hoping it will be a Fall project before it gets too cold. Same time I will pull the hydraulic lifter control for the scoop and send it to a hydraulic shop for rebuild. Local chop in Salem, OR says about 200.00 and a seal kit will fix that one.

Be sure to wash it off before taking it apart, it's filthy and that filth will cause the new seal to fail almost instantly.
