A recent thread had a link to a for-sale ad with a Yanmar that had a modified exhaust. I just found another one. Here are pics from both. I like the idea of the exhaust blowing out the back instead of up right over the hood... What do you all think about this exhaust mod?

I thought I recalled even a factory option where the exhaust ran downwards and not up. In the right instance it could be of value.

Winston has his moded a bit to either point at ground or low out front?

I have posted it before but mean no harm by doing it again for new members. I have run mind forward, down and out and it works quite well for me. I do a lot of mowing under low trees and the sticking up muffler just won't work for me.

I have my muffler in the horz position facing forward, with a auto part store add on chrome 90 degree tip. I have it this way so it won't hang up on the low branches, and rain water is not an issue. (we never have rain up here in the PNW):). But I like the idea of running it back and under. We have a local muffler guy that does custom work and will see what it would cost to run it aft. I know that I would have to order a new gasket from Hoye to flip the muffler 180 to the rear. 5.19 for the gasket, plus shipping. Will add that to the next filter order.

You're right Pete.....no rain up here in the PNW.....haven't seen any rain since the last time I looked outside. As for the muffler......mine is where it supposed to be.......a little diesel smell makes me happy and content! :confused2:

Totally true about no rain in the Pacific NW.

I have seen that kind of muffler on a John Deere 2040 but the disadvantage I can see is when you hook up implements to the 3 point hitch you will have to breathe in all that exhaust in the process. I always left my Yanmar running so I could reach forward and adjust the hitch up and down (before I got the imatch) so i didn't have to wrestle with the implement too much. I also could see that hot tail pipe running through dry grass in the summer running the risk of causing a brush fire so I would also keep that in mind. Otherwise i don't know of too many other issues, possibly additional heat radiating from it in the summer but on the flip side that may be an advantage in the winter months. :)

It's nice to keep one foot warm in winter, but it gets _awful_ warm on the foot in summer....

Hooking up implements or working with a log splitter, chipper, etc you get a good long wiff of exaust - funny how much time you spend back there & don't realize it.

We had it on a gasoline tractor, and were moderately concerned about starting a grass fire. Proably not so bad with a disel, but we would leave a brown spot if we were stationary for too long in one spot - depends on where you aim it out back I suppose.

All in all we hated it, dad changed it pretty quick. But that was us with that gas tractor, can be different for what you have....

My stack is just like you see on ebay or at Hoye for replacement mufflers. It has the angled 90 turn at the top of it. Mine is facing foward right now but am going to point it out to the side to decrease the exhaust in the face a bit more. But seriously i dont really smell it at all unless there is a stiff breeze im my face. It goes upward most of the time and am going so slow it seems to disipate before i smell it. Maybe im use to it?? Running a weedeater or lawnmower leaves me more concious that im smelling the exhaust than the tractor.

And my feet are already hot enough from then engine heat blowing backward onto them, exhaust heat would be horrible!

Mine doesn't hardly smoke. So I prefer to have all the Diesel fumes Dispersed by the open air and I hardly can smell anything. And thats even now after I quit the cigs. :D The most load I ever put on it is with the tiller. Here's a pic. of the exhaust at it's worst under a load and that when I just start a pass with the tiller and load it up. It not a problem as you can see for me and if there was mine would get ran out the back with a Quick Hitch setup. ;)
