That's to be expected. As a general rule of thumb, when you are talking product liability, the standards applied to the product in question are the standards applicable at the time of manufacture.

When uncle sam owns your butt, doesn't matter what kind of crap you get, you aren't suing anyone if someone is hurt due to "product liability".

The pressure to stay on schedule and arrive on time is the root cause of many aviation disasters. The worst offenders are the small charter airlines where the owner is also the chief pilot.

Out of all the aviation disasters that have occurred, I'd be curious to see some statistics to validate your opinion.

Can you imagine the suits that would have come out of the D-Day invasion?

Think about all of the DD (Duplex Drive) tanks that were swamped by the waves and sunk at the D-Day invasion. I believe only a small percentage of them made it ashore. These tanks had a "flotation screen" made of canvas that went up and increased their flotation. Worked fine in calmer waters, but If you remember the D-Day invasion was postponed due to stormy weather and the waves were still pretty bad on June 6th. Overall they were not a big success.

It's a known fact that the aviation industry puts a set value on a human life. Same with the automotive industry. A couple of days ago I saw that bit about the shrapnel in the airbags killing people! Good God!

Profit and loss.

That said, there is a difference IMO between the odds of a accident flying and a car company knowing that the gas tank location was a bad idea and could cause deaths.

Not smart enough on the economic side, but I'm certain there is a term for it.

No.

When the government owns you, you don't have any rights.

One reason why I believe military service should be mandatory in the United States. The reality is the average US citizen really has no clue on how well they have it per their "rights".

I don't have statistics. I did work at the airport for 6 years. Remember photo-hut type operations? 24hr film development? They collect all the film orders in an area and car drive them to local airports, throw them on small airplanes and delivered them to places like here, South Bend, IN, where they had an extremely large photo processing facility. They were under extreme deadlines. I personally pulled three of their crashed airplanes off of the runway. I've also seen damaged freight aircraft that shouldn't have been flown take off anyway. Overloaded aircraft try and take off, but couldn't. Improperly loaded aircraft. Etc.... It happens.

I can only assume you've never been in the military?

Why does everyone assume that if it'a built to "military standards" that is just HAS to be the best out there and that the military will spare no expense in having the best?

Perhaps I should have said the boat in Arkansas that sank was a WWII era boat that had been modified from it's original specs by the owner that didn't have an engineering degree, had it's 200+GPM mechanical bilge pump removed and replaced with 20GMP electric pumps, and not mentioned that the specs were modified from how the military ordered it, just that they were modified. Would that suit you better?

Maybe 20GPH electric pumps is what HF had on sale. No big deal, the chances of them ever being needed is remote.
