I bought a Toyota Pickup, new in October of 77. 20R, with the five-speed. Drove it for 245,000-miles. In 1998 I decided to try to make it not pass smog, to justify in my mind buying something newer. Quit changing the oil and doing tune-ups. In 2001, it finally didn't pass smog. It probably would have passed with a tune-up.
Bought a new Dodge mini-van and passed the Toy on to my younger brother who lived in a county which didn't require smog. He drove it for two years, until the brake master cylinder failed. It sat for about a year, until I bought the brake parts, and helped the other brother's, 16-year-old son get the parts installed and put it back on the road. He drove it for three years until he got out of high school, and went in the service. At which point it was sold for $500 to one of my cousins. He drove it as his work truck until last year, when he lost his license because he is now 82 and partially blind. My brother called me last week and asked if I want it back. It now has about 500,000-miles but is still basically rust free. (Some surface rust, but none in the typical rust out spots. Hood and roof top mostly because the paint got baked off.)
So, it is coming back to me. I'll restify it and run it until I lose my license as I get too old to drive.
By restify, I mean:
1.) Install a 22r Long block and go through the interior and electrical system. Look into installing and Aisin AMR500 supercharger, because more power much more gooder.
2.) Seats were never great and now have a lot of duct tape holding them together under the seat covers: Install new seats.
3.) Heater is hard to operate: Hopefully it just needs new plastic bushings on the levers, and new cable housings.
4.) Carpet is shot and moldy: Rhino-line the interior when I have the seats and most of the dash out.
5.) Speedo is dead, and the radio hasn't worked in years: Make and install a new digital dash cluster, and a new radio with Bluetooth.
6.) Camper shell is missing one window, and bedsides have dings and rust from things hitting them from the inside: Build it a flatbed, with fold down sides like my Kei truck has. Consider building a scissors lift dump setup. The one on the tiny truck is really handy.
7.) All the paint is faded with areas of surface rust: Have to decide between Rat Rod, with just a clear coat, Rhino-liner the whole body, and a repaint to the factory blue.
