Hey! This is a tractor forum, not an excavator forum!
Alright, I'm just really jealous. I REALLY want an excavator. Can you tilt the front blade, or is it only 2-way?
Curious - how fast is the excavator's swings compared to your tractor's backhoe? I have a Woods 9000, which is probably similar in speed to your tractor's 'hoe. I was having my septic done this past fall, and the installer let me do a little digging in the new leachfield hole with his Cat 307 excavator (kinda like Tom Sawyer). That thing was really fast - he even had it running lowish RPMs, and that bucket was flying. I wish my backhoe would move like that.

And this is a Kubota Forum, not a Komatsu, but here I go.
I have an
L39 weighted out to +8100 lbs. The
L39 has a very well matched strong hoe for the weight of the machine. I just bought a used Komatsu PC75UU-2E, an 18,000 Lb Excavator, which spec similar to the Cat 307.
It has about 4' or 5' more reach than the
L39. You can position the excavator much easier than a TLB. The ability to swing 360 degrees is a real plus.
The
L39 is reasonably fast and smooth. The excavator is much faster, especially the swing. The excavator controls are very smooth, even considering I am not an expert and there is wear and play in the pivots.
My excavator's swing torque is useless when it comes to pushing material around. The
L39 pound for pound has more dipper crowd force and swing torque. My excavator seems to have a strong boom and ok bucket curl. It is tipsy and I could easily dump it over lifting a rock not much bigger than my
L39 could handle if I am lifting to the side. The
L39 Hoe continues to amaze me, but its ability to move a quantity of dirt in a quantity of time compared to a similar weight KX-121 is much longer with the TLB. If production digging is what you need to do, the excavator is the way to go.
The Komatsu is supposely all fixed, ($$$$ ouch!), so I'll give a full report once I get a full weekends work out of it.
