I was able to get this on video because these bolts were landing every 5 seconds this morning right behind me in the woods. I didn't get any more footage because the dealer was just pulling up with my tractor delivery but let me tell you it rained so **** hard right after this video, it dropped 2 inches of rain in under a half hour. I sent the video to my sister and she asked if I was shooting my gun. I have a .50bmg but it didn't compare to this sound hahah. Enjoy

We were supposed to have a storm come yesterday with 2" hail, high winds, and possible tornadoes. Thankfully we did not get any of that, just a little wind and rain.

About 2 weeks ago about 5 in the morning both myself and my girlfriend woke up wide awake at the exact same time. We quickly realized that a thunderstorm was moving through the area. Later that day I found out what woke us up. This is about a 1/4 mile from the house.

This is the second Ash tree that has been hit by lightning. The first was about 100 yards from the house and about 60 feet lower than the house. This one was about at the same height. The odd thing is that we are on the side of a pretty tall hill but not at the top. We are about 400 feet lower than the peak, which is only a 1/4 from the house, much higher than either of the two ash trees.

The funny thing is later that afternoon the son of the landowner behind us decided to cut some firewood and now couldn't get his Ford back up the hill when another thunderstorm hit. He needed a tow. While driving my Kubota out to pull him up the hill in the pouring rain I stopped and pointed out the tree on his property that got struck that morning. That kind of put a fire under him to get the truck out of the woods.

It split a strip right from the very top of the tree right down to the roots. I always assumed that because the ridge behind the house was quite a bit higher than the house I had nothing to worry about when it comes to lightning. But it really looks like lightning has a mind of it's own. It mostly stayed on the outer layer of the tree but did go about an inch deep in one spot.

I have a group of 4 or 5 trees like that in the woods.

A few years ago a bolt hit a large oak about 100 feet from the house. I was supposed to be working under that tree that day splitting wood but I knew a front was approaching and I decided to skip chores and call my parents. When I was on the phone, I looked out the back door, which I never do when I on the phone, and at the instant a lightning bolt hit that tree. EVERYTHING just whited out, the BOOM was so loud it was is unreal. Course the power went out but returned real quick. The cell call dropped as well. Bark was blown from the tree almost to the house. The tree look ok but a few months later all of the green leaves were dead.

There was not a cloud in the sky when the lightning bolt hit. The storm front was 20-30 miles to the west.

We have quite a few dead trees and I think they are from lightning. There is a tree south of the house that is taller than other trees and I noticed last year it was dead. I assume lightning got it.

Later,
Dan

Here are a couple of trees that were struck by lightning.

There was a 3rd tree there but I already cut it up. There is also a 4th tree not too far away that is dead that looks like it may have been struck by lightning,
