A buddy of mine from NC came up to visit and brought a mason jar of home distilled white lightnin, wow that stuff is not only real strong but tastes real good also !!! Im mostly a beer drinker but occasionally have something stronger. I was really impressed how smooth this stuff is !!!

Gotta drink it cold :) Keep the jar in the refrig :) A boy could get in trouble drinkin that stuff :) Anyways, my hats off to you guys that have availabilty to that beverage, and to be fair about it, Im sure its just as good from Tn,Ky, WVa etc. I think Im converted :)

Hi Scotty
The last time I had some of that shine was when I visited a friend down in Naples Florida. Didn't realize just how strong it was until it was to late. Glad I was spending the night with him because I was a wreck looking for a place to happen at the time.

I grew up in the mountains of NC and saw quite a few people get in trouble in a hurry drinking it;). I have heard the good stuff is really good and the bad stuff ... well don't mess with it:eek:.

Also, I have heard it is a good idea to know who made it before one partakes - as you can get lead poisoning drinking it if not distilled properly

I was told one can test it by putting a small amount in a spoon and light it - if it burns blue it is true, if it has any orange in the flame - Do not drink it.

A little bit does go a long long way and it sure can make you shine!:D

That's just another of those things that I don't consider to be worth the risk; possibly because my Dad had an uncle who nearly died as a young man when he got some bad moonshine. He eventually (partially) recovered and then was paralyzed from the waist down the rest of his life.

I certainly agree with that Bird, my Dad's uncle lost his eyesight to some bad moonshine and was blind the rest of his life.

Mornin Bird,
Well I dont totally dissagree with your statement, the only saving grace is that my buddy has used the same distiller for many years and swears by him !

But thanks for your concerns and comments also !!!

Bird -

Was 'shine' popular in TX when you were a lawman? You are correct about the dangers too - people need to be aware.

My Grandmother used to keep some around for "medicinal purposes only" - when I was young she would mix it with rock candy and give it to us if we had a bad cough -

I was a teen and out hunting one time I got lost, and found myself in the middle of a laurel thicket, wandered down the mountain toward a creek I could hear figuring I could follow the creek down to a road. As I got closer to the sound I could also smell smoke. I ended up walking right out into an opening where a still was cooking - did not see anyone and did not want to. Did not stick around either as I knew the danger I was in. The good Lord was looking out for me that day!

Scott - Your buddy is smart

Knowing the source is critical - not knowing can be deadly

I never knew anyone personally that got any bad shine, but was aware of the danger.

About ten years ago my brother was competing in a field trial for pointers. He's also a judge. One of the guys there was from the "South" and had some moon shine with him.

My brother was hospitalized from it and the damage it did to his stomach lining. He's all better now, but it was extremly painful. It was also a learning experience for him and now he only drinks beer.

Mornin Eddie,
Good to hear from you!

I think before this thread goes much farther, I need to state that Im certainly not advocating that others should try drinkin this stuff !!! I have known my buddy a long time and trust his judgement, but I also dont want to pooh pooh all the other people that have had adverse reactions or know others that have had misfortunate experiences with this stuff !!!

My original intent was a light hearted post directed at those who have tried this stuff in the past.
