Need Hydraulic Dipstick Replacement - New Holland Work master 40

Hey all, I am quite upset tonight.

I broke the hydraulic dipstick handle while attempting to get the dipstick out.. The tractor has been sitting for a while and the dipstick is absolutely welded to the tractor it feels like... After I broke the white nob handle off I attempted to pry the dipstick out with a flat head but I didn't want to do any further damage before I look for some advice from other owners...

What should I do in this instance?

I saw online that there are some other dipsticks that can be purchased to replace this one but I need some advice on the process.. Should I just pry this dipstick out and not worry about the damage, and get a replacement ?

Should I spray it with some WD40 to try and help it come off?

I am shocked at how badly it is stuck on there and am extremely upset with myself for breaking the handle off...

I would love to be able to find the exact same dipstick but I have been unable to so far..

This is the closest thing I was able to find and it appears as if the handle is metal so, maybe it's a better option for the future?

I know it was bad to let it sit so long without taking the dipstick out but I had some life issues come up that ended up keeping me away from the tractor for quite some time..

I'm not familiar with your model. I will say don't beat yourself over it. They should not make dipsticks so hard to remove or as your describing it , out of plastic. I had to have a dipstick replaced under warranty from NH because mine was so tight it stripped the hex head off trying to remove it the fist time. And mine was metal. It was pretty obvious nobody at NH checked the oil before delivery. The paint was part of the issue.

I think it will come out. Every craftsman learns to deal with that sort of thing.
When something like this happens I've learned to back off until I understand it. You won't know why it is stuck until you get it out, but right now I can't tell if if it presss into place or unscrews. Do you know that?
If not, I'd go look at another one before mangling what you have left - and then make a plan.

If it unscrews, you may be able to grab onto that steel part in the broken handle - although that won't give you much leverage. I have have had better luck by tapping around the perimeter with a hammer and punch to move stuck threaded fasteners in a CCW direction. The trick is to use a sharp little chisel or punch to make a dent in the outer edge, and then switch to a blunt punch get it moving CCW. Once it moves a fraction you are going to win.

Or if it is a slip fit and presses down to seal I'd do it differently. In that case, get a tack claw and work around the edges levering it up a little at a time.

I want to say that I believe it is supposed to just pop out of there without having to unscrew it.. so I believe it is slip fit... However, I may be wrong.. But I did attempt to turn it CCW and it didn't seem to make an progress that you would typically expect from something that unscrewed, that is what prompted me to try and pull it out and then I broke the top off..

That ring is supposed to be a special type of material that is resistant to trans/hydraulic oil. The internal transmission bearing seals are made from the same stuff - often Nitrile.

My suspicion is that O ring came in contact with the wrong oil or grease - and the O ring surface turned to glue.

Ahh!

This would be messed up and quite possible considering my FIL was known for sometimes using the wrong stuff because he didn't worry about those types of things as much as he might should have

The replacement dipstick looks like it presses in. If that's the picture of course.

Also its got quite a serious rubber stopper there. I could see that being hard to remove even when in good condition.

Pizz on WD40. All it is, is a moisture dispersant. Use PBlaster or an acetone and ATF mix. Pull it out and measure it and buy a length of round stock and make a new one. Simple and cheap fix.

I would heat it up with a heat gun and try to pull it off/pry it off.
