My old Epson Color 980 inkjet printer is on it's last leg and it is time for a replacement. The color output has never matched the screen colors very well anyway and I'm sure printers have improved in the 4 or 5 years I have had this one.

Anybody have a color inkjet printer they are really happy with and would recommend?

Anyone have a printer that is really bad so I know to avoid it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I purchased an Epson CX4600 3 in 1 printer/scanner/copier in December on the recommendation of GerardC. I have been completely satisfied with its performance. Prints great!

I have the Epson CX6600. I'm very happy with it. Tigerdirect, Newegg and even Bestbuy have good prices.

It is probably more than you need but I have an HP1220C that is great and color matchs are good. This printer will print up to 13" x 19" plus roll paper. My son has a printer that he is using for color photos that he likes. I will ask what brand/model it is.

Bill, this is generic advice as all I have is high dollar printers at our print shop. When looking for a color printer be it lazer, inkjet or whatever always look at the quality but most are pretty darn good but then look at supplies some toner and inkjet ink cost a lot more than others and in a color machine always get one that has seperate containers for each color otherwise every time you run out of 1 color you have to throw the whole thing away and replace with a new cartridge containing all 4 if you want good color as a matter of fact some printers don't even give you the option of just printing it out with what is left and will shut down until you replace the single cartridge type. Also look at yields from the manufactures containers although some are much larger than others the inside goody and how their machine distributes it controls the yield. Yields in commercial equipment have gotten easier to comeby not sure how the residential models do on reporting their yields at a specific coverage usually they use somewhere in the 5 to 15% arena so it'll be up to you to use your calculator to get them all on an even playing field.

Thanks for the advice so far. Based on that I am looking at the CX4600 and the CX6600. They both use separate ink cartridges for each color so they fit Stevenf's criteria.

Any other suggestions or experiences are welcomed.

The Canons are the fastest printers and they have the cheapest inks. Check out this one for a photo printer Steves review
And check out this all in one canon all in one

and here is the cheapest place i have found to buy ink for the Canons. I use their generic ink for my photo printer and can't tell the difference between it and Canon brand ink. Abacas

I usually recommend inkjets to people by ruling out the bad ones.

Stay away from HP. HP has started putting circuitry in the cartridges that makes it expire even if it has not run out yet for the exclusive purpose of getting your bucks on new cartridges. Even if it is still printing fine. HP printers have also dropped in build quality in the last 3-5 years.

Stay away from Lexmark and Dell printers (Dell printers are made by Lexmark). They are doing things even worse than HP. Not just the circuitry in the printhead, but suing other companies out of existence that try to make it possible to refill those cartridges.

That really only leaves Canon and Epson.. and I personally believe with the many many inkjet printers that I deal with for side work. Epsons are the most stable and well built at the moment. They also are not doing any of the questionable stuff with their cartridges.

Canons are good for all the same reasons as the Epsons... just not quite AS good as the Epsons.

I think Steve's is the best sight for printers. I have the Epson R800. The Canon i9900 I think it is, is incredible.
