When my 03’ Chevy 1500HD Quadrasteer hit 200,000 miles, I took it to my favorite repair shop and told them they have a $5k budget to fix everything and anything that needs attention. It came back with a differential rebuild, a transmission hose replacement, and replaced the knock sensors because it was just throwing the computer off a little. Bill was $2,100 and an offer to buy it.

It’s still with me and I just gave it a new coat of paint by a reputable body shop. Loving it!

Correct, same 6.0L LQ4 and 4L80 trans, 8-lug hubs/wheels, etc. I tried to find a clean 1500HD for a while but there's not very many around in good shape still.

As I recall from researching, the 1500HD is essentially a 2500HD but w/ 2" lower suspension. I think it only came in a crew-cab, 6.5' bed config.

Unless you are loaded or towing most of the time, the 4:10 rear end gearing is a very thirsty one.
3:56 is much more practical.

You can 3:56’s in an HD now? Cool. Is it because the newer trucks have so much hp and torque, they can handle the road gearing? Or is the transmissions?

Not from GM/Chevy, they have 3.42s (usually on the Duramax) or 3.73s standard on the new 6.6L gas. But yes, the 8 and 10 speeds transmissions are what enable lower rear axle ratios, since the ratio spread in the trans can be so much higher and they shift very quickly/efficiently.

Get a 4WD. Too many times you will get in a situation where you can't back up a slope, pull out of minor muck, ghet going with a load up hill, etd. NO QUESTION. Get 4WD.

I just sold my 2002 Chevy 1500HD in 4x4 & 6.0L. Best darn truck I ever owned. 230,095 miles and it still ran & handled like new. Upsized to a 2019 Chevy 3500HD.

I guess you don't see much snow down there in LA, but you must encounter mud from time to time - there's no way I would even consider buying a 2WD truck for any sort of farm work, especially towing. I've even had to put my Ram 2500 Cummins into 4WD on hot dry roads on occasions when trying to get rolling up a steep grade with a heavy trailer on the back - more than enough power but, even with the factory LSD, I couldn't get enough traction in 2WD to get her moving. Even a V6 with 4WD will tow better than any 2WD truck! I also have an older Ram (also 4WD) with the 5.9 gas V8, and that has plenty of power for anything I've ever towed but you can't beat diesel for sheer effortless pulling power - and half decent fuel consumption. My 6.7L Cummins will give me over 20mpg on the shopping run and 13mpg when worked hard.

Back when I researched, it was essentially missing one leaf spring which may explain the ride height. You’re correct, it IS essentially a 2500. I recall the time when I went to rent a 14k trailer and the clerk said they only rent them for 3/4 ton trucks or higher. I told him that it IS a 3/4 and he can google up the specs. He stood firm. WTF?
