NEED PIC\'S OF GAUGE WHEELS

I'm building a 60 inch landscape rake, just getting it ready for paint and then put the tines on. I want to build the gauge wheels myself too, NEED SOME IDEAS(PIC'S)

You could try using the Search feature of TBN to find some info. Use the phrase "Gauge Wheels" and you will find info.

However, I will save you the trouble. Here is a thread on how I made mine for my homemade landscape rake.

I think MadRefs thread is the best answer to your question.

Here is a thread that has some pictures of how Freds and I applied gage wheels to back blades (future project for you?). Not rakes but the principle is the same.

Had I not already had factory wheels for my rake, I would have followed in MadRef's foot steps.

Don't forget to post follow up photos of your project! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: NEED PIC\'S OF GAUGE WHEELS

JD,
If you weld a short piece of angle iron on the inside of the angle the tines attach to, that's what the square tubing of the ga wheels was bolted to on my landscape rake (Woods I think). One piece of angle iron on either side and four bolts. Pretty simple really.
The 2x2x1/4" sq tubing give them strength because they are sticking out pretty far beyond the tines so they can swivel completely around.

Re: NEED PIC\'S OF GAUGE WHEELS

ok ... so is the consensus that gage wheels are better than other methods? I have been thinking of putting a pipe on the bottom of the blade to stop the scalping .... but gage wheels would certainly be less work.

On the same topic - snow plows ... has anyone put together a bracket arrangement to use the blade on the bucket? That was my first thought ... but haven't gotten beyong the thinking stage ...

Re: NEED PIC\'S OF GAUGE WHEELS

I see I'm not the only one to refuse to spend a lot of $$$ for something I can build. When I checked out wheel kits for my landscape rake I almost fell over with shock.
Went to Tractor Supply, bought two 10" wheels and fabricated the spindles out of scrap metal laying around. They rotate 360 degrees are height adjustable every 1 inch and I even put grease fittings. Its not pretty but for 25 bucks in materials and a hour labor I'm at least 150 ahead.

Re: NEED PIC\'S OF GAUGE WHEELS

Sorry Slydog,
I've got her and the other implements on pallets and covered up. Its still winter here in the Northeast and it keeps reminding us every day. Got a possible BIG Noreaster coming this week. I hope not, I'm ready for spring.
Anyhow, I just used some left over 1 1/2" square tube, a couple pieces of 1/4" plate and a pipe with a couple of 1" solid stock that came from a school that was from a weightlifting machine. Welded up and bingo. The wheel set is fully adjustable and easily removed. Its amazing the good stuff that gets thrown out.
I'm all for making stuff but there is a limit. There is no sense to make something if you can't reasonably save money or it is more cost effective to just buy.
