Runner, please do share if you try out those Gator blades. If I beat you to it, I will do the same.

I keep meaning to make time to run to the mower shop that sells but Cub and Oregon to see if they have experience with it, or can just grab a set of blades to measure side by side. So far it hasn't bubbled to the top of the list...
I have a set of the G5 Gator 596-351 blades on order, so may be able to try them in a couple of weeks. Gator® G5™ Blade, 19" | Oregon Products
I am concerned that the Gators may not produce enough lift to get grass into the bagger, but that's another reason I need to try them out. If they do, then I might just start running them all the time.

So dry that there is no grass to cut right now, but we finally started getting some rain last night, so maybe....

What I am looking for now is a direct replacement type blade (not a Gator mulching style) to replace the stock high-lift blades that seem to be soft steel. Oregon makes a "98-091" which is the right size, but less cutting edge (the beveled cutting edge doesn't extend up the curved part of the blade like on the stock blade). Mower Blade, 19" | Oregon Products
Still might be worth a try.

OK, finally got a chance to try out the new Gator Blades yesterday (596-351). Last rain was a couple of inches about 3 weeks ago, so conditions were very dry, 8" to 10" tall and LOTS of crab grass.

First up was to try the Gators with the bagger. They aren't supposed to be "high lift", don't look like they are high lift, and they aren't. Got about 100 feet with the bagger and the chute just filled and plugged. That was exactly what I thought would happen, but I had to try. If I want to use the bagger, I will HAVE to use the stock high-lift blades.

Problem is, I like to put the bagger on from time to time throughout the summer to box up some grass to dump in the compost pile. It would be a HUGE pain to have to change blades just to bag some grass, then change back again. But, that's an issue I'll have to sort out later.

As for the Gators, they are very good quality, came fully painted and were not sharp, so I had to put an edge on them with the flap disk before mounting. These 19" blades are a perfect fit for the ZTXS5 54. The blades performed flawlessly, blowing through 10" tall water grass, crab grass and fescue without leaving any "stragglers". Clipping dispersal was fine, but I did not see as much mulching action with either grass or leaves as I expected. However, I did not really buy them for mulching, just for general mowing.

If I wanted to mulch, I would install the Cub Cadet mulching kit (which I DO have for this machine, but have not tried yet). The CC mulching kit comes with a set of CC mulching blades (see photos for comparison).

After mowing, I removed the Gators and switched back to the standard CC high-lift blades (because I will probably be bagging leaves next time I mow). My impression is that the Gators will work very well for general mowing. They seem to be harder steel than the original equipment blades and showed no wear or dings after 1.5 hours on the machine.

Now, a word about servicing the blades on the ZTXS5. You will notice in the photos below, I am using the Harbor Freight Fischer 750 lb mower lift. I bought this as soon as I ordered the mower because I knew I was going to need a safe way to jack this thing up. I have now used it several times and am VERY glad I bought one. I gave brief thought to coming up with some other way to raise the machine (chain hoist, etc.), but this is just so easy and safe. The wheel cradles are adjustable and it has automatic locking mechanisms (though I still used jack stands for a little extra security). The only issue I have with it is that it is big, bulky and hard to store. But I wouldn't want to have a ZTR without it.

Some mowers you can loosen the blade nuts just by using a block of wood to hold the blades while turning the wrench. However, on this one, at least some of the time, the entire shaft turns and you have to put a wrench on the top of the shaft to hold it while loosening. At least the safety covers are easily removed via large plastic wing nuts.

Between the spindle and the blade is a large thrust washer, looking very much like that used with a boat propeller. Under the blade is a thick lock washer that meshes with flutes machined into the spindle, followed by a self-locking 15/16" nut. Torque is "70 - 90 ft lbs" per manual, I used 75.

The ZTXS5 now has about 27 hours and is running good, with no issues. I have perfected the art of cold starting it - takes two hands, one on the key, the other on the choke. Throttle up 1/3, choke on, turn key and AS SOON AS IT FIRES choke off with the other hand. Otherwise, it floods and you wind up cranking and starting with a big cloud of smoke. If I had bigger hands, I might be able to perform this operation with one hand.....

Now, some piccys....
Comparison of blades - Gator 596-351 (top), Cub Cadet mulching blade (middle), Cub Cadet standard high-lift (bottom).

I never really considered Gator blade's performance for bagging, as I don't bag with my zero turns. Sounds like they just don't move enough air out of the chute for the bagger. I do use gators on my walk behind and bagger, but that is a short shot for the grass to go.
I use Gator blades all season on the zero turns, and they are the best wearing blades I have used.

I've tried the Gator blades on my Simplicity ZTR's. What I found was that with even the slightest wet grass it would have more chances at clogging the exit area. The Gator blades also due to them cutting the grass into smaller pieces would clump more easily and buildup grass under the deck causing it to bog as the clumps tried to be recut underneath. With the regular blades it would also throw the grass further out the side and disperse it more evenly and not leave clumped areas on the lawn. Basically the Gator blades provided little benefit on both of them. Probably due to the design characteristics of the deck itself. On other rider mowers I've used them on including the Black Craftsman professional those blades worked far better than the OEM ones. I think deck design makes it different when using those.

Upon returning to the shop after yesterdays yard work, I noticed a nice puddle of oil under the Cub. Closer inspection revealed it was dripping from the rim of the opening in the frame where the main pulley shaft extends down from the engine.

It is coming from around the base plate of the engine. Suspect this is due to my bone-headed move while doing the first oil change. While changing the filter, I just stuffed some newspaper around the area under the filter, thinking I'd be able to remove it fast enough to avoid much oil spillage - not.

So wound up with a lot of used oil around the base of the engine, which I though I got cleaned up. But, after doing some leaf pickup (very dusty work), I noticed dust sticking to oil residue around the base.

Long story long, I think there was just more oil that seeped under the engine than I realized and since the machine's been parked in the same spot for a month or so, it just has the opportunity to make a puddle.

Didn't have time to mess with it yesterday, but will investigate further, do a good clean-up on it, check the oil level and keep an eye on it.

That's nothing to worry about. If it turns into a big puddle and your missing oil from the engine then worry. Otherwise just run it.

That's pretty much the plan. Going to give it a thorough looking-over and cleaning today. Then, check the oil and make sure the oil drain hose is good and tight.

First use of ZTXS5 54 for fall leaf pickup yesterday. As a refresher, I have previously been VERY satisfied with the effectiveness of the triple-bagger system for picking up grass clippings. I have one large cottonwood tree in the front yard that has lost most of its leaves due to drought and season.

The machine worked well, but did seem to kick a fairly large number of leaves out the front/left side of the mower deck that required a second pass to pick up. I found that slowing down and taking 1/2 swath tended to minimize this problem, but some leaves were still blown out.

The extent of pickup was mostly limited to the cottonwood leaves which were very dry and light, so that may have exacerbated the situation. Also, I am still in summer mowing mode, which means deck height set at 4.5 inches. Lowering the height may help eliminate leaf blowout.

Still need to try out the mulching system, but need to continue collecting leaves for now to stock up the compost pile.

Will report back after trial in more ideal conditions.

I will also note that, due to dryness, the machine was emitting a tremendous amount of dust from the bagger, which of course, is located immediately behind the engine air intake. This situation bothers me, but not much I can do about it except change the filter when I'm done....
Cub Cadet sell a deck debris blow out kit that attaches to the underneath front edge of the mower deck to prevent blow out. Check with Cud Cadet or you dealer to see if available for your unit.

Cub Cadet, built by MTD (More Tools Desired)....lol

Wife has one with the steering wheel as well and I bought it used from my Kubota dealer who also sells MTD stuff, used, for a grand. No ZTR rides good that I know of and why I sold my MTD/Cub M60 Tank and bought a Kubota F series front mount diesel powered mower. It actually has a nice ride, not a kidney bruiser. We mow not only the farm property but 3 rentals as well.
