Ford 1710
Hey folks,

I’ve been reading through the posts here and have been able to glean a lot of good information, so thanks for that!

I just recently picked up a Yanmar 240D (pictures attached). Uncertain of year, but serial number is 169. Seems like a good all around tractor. Up until now I’ve been using my Ford 1710 (without FEL) to maintain our property. I use the 1710 and a 5’ finish mower to mow about 8 acres containing an airstrip at my house and use my zero turn for the 3 acres immediately surrounding my house. The 1710 does a great job spinning that mower and moving at a decent speed, but I have been wanting something in this size range with a front end loader for some time now. I wasn’t aware that Yanmar made tractors until I found this one listed locally. I did a quick Google search, found this forum, and realized they have a pretty good reputation.

I have a few concerns but theres one main one that I was hoping you guys could help me feel better about, or diagnose if it’s a problem.
The exhaust note/engine sounds on this tractor sound very strange to me. It could be because I’m accustomed to 3-cylinder tractors, but when it first started up, I immediately thought “exhaust leak”. I felt around all over the engine and exhaust system while it was running but still cool to the touch and couldn’t feel any leaks, (except out of the upper most exhaust extension pipe, which had been caught on something at some point and pivoted rearward in its clamp, allowing some exhaust to escape. I muffled that joint with a rag but that wasn’t the sound I was looking for). It’s almost a “thump” or a “plunger” sound. I’ll take a video and post it, but I thought I’d describe it as well if the video audio doesn’t come through well.

I purchased this tractor from an older gentlemen who had owned it about two years and used it for bush hogging around his property. Stored under a shed when not in use. He said that it has sounded and performed like this the entire time he’s owned it. He purchased it from a young man and his father, who are both diesel mechanics. It was allegedly purchased by them from the original owner. The man I bought it from said the young man and his father had rebuilt the engine. I asked if he knew why, and he did not. I say all this to tell you the engine has been into fairly recently, in case you would you find that information useful.

I’ve read about the “Yammer Hammer” adages, and since it wasn’t smoking excessively, seemed to be running well, and seemed to be making an amount of power appropriate for a tractor this size, I went ahead and bought it.
I’m about to order the manuals from Hoye to become more familiar with it and change all the filters and fluids, but I’m going to need to put it to work pretty quickly doing some landscaping and spreading a couple dozen yards of river rock around my house. I thought I would put it to you all in hopes you could help me avoid an expensive oversight. Could I be missing a timing or valve issue here?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff in Arkansas

Jeff,

A really nice Tree Frog you picked up. :)

Your YM240D looks to have an aftermarket exhaust. Does it sound more like a 'tinny' noise?

As we head into warmer temps, 10W30 engine diesel oil is ideal for these Yanmars. If the oil is a thicker grade, the sounds out of the exhaust would tell you.

Over at the Yanmar Tractors Owners Group, there are several FREE manuals, brochures, and Technical Service Bulletins on your model. The link is in my signature below.

For a 40 year old tractor, it looks to be in a mighty fine shape. With that many years, and possibly hours, a rebuild on the engine is a help. Piston rings and bearings tend to wear. At times the springs in the head need replacing.

Welcome!

You're going to love it.

A sound like a rod is about to come through the block is normal for these. Listen to some YouTube videos for YM240, YM2000 (its Japan-market equivalent), also YM195 and YM1700 (same tractor, slightly smaller version).

I doubt you have a problem. These are loud, crude. The sound of raw power! :D

That's the original muffler, same as my YM240 (2wd), Somebody added the extension above it.

I put a ROPS on mine after someone posted that where he worked, their YM240 flopped over on its side occasionally using the loader - on flat ground. I have steep side slopes ... Hoye sells the ROPS for these.

That looks to be in nice condition. Someone maintained it well. You did good!

Thanks for the information folks. I feel a little silly now. I realized the abnormal sound I’m hearing is coming from the air cleaner (pics attached). It’s a steady “lub” sound, proportional to engine speed. I guess I’ve just not heard anything take a breath like this thing does. I also found an Edlebrock air cleaner cover in use in place of the original, flipped upside down, that does not seal the air box. Any ideas where I could find a suitable, correct replacement?

bmmaverick; thanks for the reassurance and oil recommendation. I’ll certainly take that advice!

California, thanks for the reassurance. I’ll look into the ROPS. This certainly feels narrower than I’m accustomed too and would like the added safety. I also found your thread on installing the Amazon joystick control and look forward to doing the same.

...Edlebrock air cleaner cover that does not seal the air box.

Just get single side adhesive, foam insulation strips intended for use around a window, and make a seal ring glued to that fancy cover so dust can't get past the element. It will take you a while to find the correct cover.

It is important to seal out dust! Wayne (LMTC) import seller long ago, said he had rebuilt Yanmars ruined by running an almost-fit American car filter element that was too short and made an internal gap similar to your photo. He said it didn't take very many hours working in dirt to scour rings and cylinder walls with abrasive dust. I keep a continual Ebay search going for the proper Yanmar element. When I get an email notification for one at a reasonable price, I buy it.

I replaced that same AICO loader control because it dribbled on my foot. I suggest leave it alone if there isn't a problem. Also, hoses can look awful but serve fine long after the outer rubber rotted off. There are two steel plies protecting the core. I tend to tear off hoses rasseling fallen trees in my apple orchard so over 20 years I've replaced a few, but I only recall one that needed replacement due to sweating. Most are original and look like heck but I replace only when ruined by user abuse, not based on appearance.

Edited - to properly quote Wayne.
