Tractor
Case
My dad is looking to buy a new or somewhat new tractor with loader and cab, this really wasn't in the plans at this moment but had a tractor catch fire so need to do something, still waiting on insurance, pretty sure will be a total loss. Was looking at the new 5m series, specifically the 5120 or 5130m. Talked to some dealers and for a new or fairly new one, they seem to be around 115k. He hates to spend that much. Got looking at used ones, found a 6140d with cab and loader with low hours, 1800 for around 65k. How does the 6140d compare to the new 5m series? This will be used as a field tractor planting corn, beans, cutting and baling hay, general loader work, pulling a grain buggy in the fall.

Not sure what tractor you are replacing, but the 5M series have a considerable better hydraulic capacity than the 6D. They also offer some nicer transmission options for the application you will be using it for. The 6D is a simpler more basic design, but depending on what you were used to running before and what model/size planter, drill, hay equipment and grain buggy you have can make a big difference in your decision.

If you can get a new 5M that size with a loader for $115K you better jump on it.

He decided on the 6140d. It does have the 12/12 instead of the 9/9 which is what the older model has. We both realize that the 5130m would have a better transmission, probably more comfort features, better hydraulics. But even after insurance payout, it wasn't really in the budget at this moment to spend that much. We both realize that the 6140d is a simpler tractor which in a way is a good thing. All that new electronics that the 5130m has would be nice and all but at same time, I would imagine could become a nightmare once you start having issues with all that stuff. This is replacing a Case 110A.

It sounds like your dad is in a tough spot after the tractor fire. The John Deere 5M series, specifically the 5120M and 5130M, are great options known for their versatility and efficiency. They are designed for tasks like planting, cutting hay, and general loader work, so they would serve well in your dad's operations.

On the other hand, the 6140D is a solid choice, especially at the price point you mentioned. It’s slightly older, but it typically has a robust build and reliable performance for fieldwork. While it may not have some of the newer features of the 5M series, its lower cost and low hours make it an appealing option, especially for the tasks you described.

Ultimately, if your dad can find a well-maintained 6140D, it could be a great value. If he can stretch the budget a bit, the 5M series might offer more advanced technology and comfort features that could be worth the investment in the long run. It might be helpful to check for any warranties or service packages with the dealers as well!

@Memory Was the Case 110A a 24spd ?

The JD 6140D will probably be way faster ground speed in A range 1st gear than what your used too.

It All depends on your application whether this will be a problem.

Best of Luck & I hope you made the right choice.

I remember looking at this thread and thinking if it were me I'd go for the 6140d.
Hope it is working for them.

I do like used - or what I call "experienced" - equipment for more than just the price savings. Older machines are closer to an era when JD made tractors to be kept up and repaired by the user. That appeals to me.

And although I don't do my own heavy repair work anymore, I still prefer to have simpler machinery that makes sense to me. Tier 3, for example.

Thanks! I appreciate the insight. I’ll definitely keep that in mind and see how it fits my needs. Hopefully, it works out well for my application. Appreciate the well wishes!
