While driving the tractor at night, the idiot light for the battery came on. I thought it was a problem with the Ater/generator. I was using it for a hayride and as long as I kept the RPMs up the light would go out. We tested the battery and it was weak so I purchased a new battery and put it in the tractor. The light stayed out and everything was fine for several weeks.
As I was mowing the tractor shut down and smoke started to come out from underneath the dash. We tore the tractor apart and found that the voltage regulator had overheated and started to melt. Checked the wiring an all the connections. Everything seemed good so we put in a new regulator. The idiot light was out. The tractor started up and ran nicely and thought we were all good. One day as I was mowing, I tried to shut the Tractor down with the key. Removing the key from the tractor did not shut the machine down.
Several weeks later, the smokes started coming out from underneath the dash again. This time the regulator was starting to melt, and the connector that plugs it into the wiring harness started to melt. I took the alternator / generator to an alternator repair shop and tested it. They said everything was fine.
We took all the wires connections apart, clean them, brush them and reattach them. We also installed a new ignition switch. The new regulator was installed. The idiot light was out. And I thought everything was good. I went to mow with it again and after about a half an hour the idiot light came back on.
I was looking for suggestions as to where to look for problems. And if somebody has a good schematic of the wiring system, that would great if you could share it. The schematic in the owners manual is a very poor quality drawing.
