I really don't adjust my tilt steering very often, as evidenced by the fact that I recently tried to pull up on the lever to adjust and it was frozen solid. I sprayed it with penetrating oil and waited about 24 hours before trying again. Guess I tried a little too hard because something behind the cover apparently broke and now the steering wheel freely moves up and down with no way to lock it in place. Imagine trying to mow for 3 hours (which I did today) with the steering wheel flopping up and down at will.

So, does anyone have any experience removing the cover below the steering wheel and also fixing whatever is causing this problem???

Thanks so much for any input.

Mine has been frozen for years. Your result is why it stays that way, I was afraid something would break. Here is the parts diagram from Messick's site. Looks like most of the parts are still available.

Mine's broken too. Flops around. I'm going to take it off and make something the same size to hold the wheel rigid. I might put some threaded rod in to make it adjustable.

@VOL54 - To remove the lower side consoles there are (2) bolts where they meet just in front of the seat & then each side has (2) additional bolts you have to gain access to from under the hood on the firewall...

If you have never had the lower side consoles off before... be careful when you are removing the 2 bolt from the firewall (under the hood) those bolts see a lot of heat & sometimes freeze up in there.

They go through the firewall & then into brass blind nuts that are molded into the console panel itself... If they don't easily come free spray them down a few times with penetrating oil & be patient (go easy).

If you break the blind nuts molded in the console panel so it spins free in the console or worse yet break the console piece; it is a painful (& expensive) lesson to learn...

This diagram might help...

My Case Farmall 40 (basically the same tractor) was locked up when I bought it. I got a replacement shock from amazon and with minimal filing, it works great. Now, If you broke any other component (10B-10D), that may be a dealer item. Either way it is worth repairing. You do have to remove the steering column covers (6- 12mm bolts), 2 on each side under the hood and the 2 that hold both covers together. The hardest part is putting the covers back on unless you have someone to hold them while you put the bolts back in.

edit: dlctcg and i where writing/posting at the same time

Had to remove the lower panels below the instrument panel to get to the cylinder. Bottom pin was rusted place. Half a can of penetrating oil later and a large hammer later, it came out. Worst part of the whole operatation is, for some reason or another, now the tractor won't start.......totally dead....no power, no start, no dash lights, no nothing. Currently trying to track down THAT issue. May have to come back to the forum for help. Thanks.

Sounds like my kind of luck. Fix a problem, cause a problem.

I suspect you blew a fuse RR the panel.

Please explain what you mean by "RR the panel"...... I have visually checked all fuses and they seem to be good. May have to just go ahead and replace them just in case.
