Hi Guys,

Wouldn't you just know it - I have just had my first equipment failure. I was clearing snow and I managed to break the plate that the steering cylinder connects to on the LH wheel. It broke clean off. It is cast iron and not mild steel so this item, I suspect, will be prone to breaking.

Was a bugger to get the tractor back into the shop as I had to lift the front with the FEL so I could point the wheels in the direction I wanted to go. Took about 45 mins to go maybe 50 yds or so. At least the weather was mild at around 28F (-3C) , so I had a comfortable workout.

Have attached three pics so you can see. Only 30 hours on the tractor. Looks like this might be a common failure item with these tractors.

Ho-hum, gotta take the good with the bad I guess.

Jim

Please post back with the parts support that you receive. I've a JM 354 Jinma that has been a good tractor to get parts for, and hope the parts support is there for you as well. bjr

Jim, bummer.
Can't tell for sure, but it was probably a bad casting to start with. Sometimes an inclusion gets overlooked or painted over and is missed. That piece should also be relatively inexpensive, but in your case if you're still under warranty, the parts should be covered. Let us know how it is handled and in what time frame.

How are you liking your 554 other than that?

Hi Rob,

Yes, I think it has gas bubbles in there - it looks pretty grainy thats for sure. I don't have it off the tractor yet - too many other things going on (who said retirement let you take it easy!!!!).

I found one down south - a lot of the dealers didn't stock them yet. It looks like the same part is used on the 40hp - 65hp tractors, according to my parts book. It is not that cheap but postage, handling, tax etc will almost double the cost by the time I get it.

I have already made enquiries about a replacement part under warranty. Even though I got a crate deal, there is still supposed to be a part replacement arrangement. If it works out ok, then I will have a spare. I think I will need it as the cast iron is not very tough so having a spare won't do me any harm and will allow for quick replacement if need be.

Other than the steering knuckle failure I am happy with the tractor. Haven't done much that would really tax it other than use the FEL a lot with snow and ice removal lately. Handles the snow removal well and that wet snow/ice is heavy with a full bucket. It handles much better than the old MF65 (gas) and uses quite a bit less fuel (diesel).

How is your front end re-build going? Hopefully you will get it finished soon. Then you have to work on the wifey's tractor right?

Cheers

Jim

Well, I am at home right now and won't get to my property until Sunday. After I get the replacement parts and install them, I'll update that thread. Thanks for asking Jim.
Hope you get your repair knocked out too!:)
