New Mower and a Lesson Learned

I bought a shredder from the dealer here in Finland. Before I fired it up, I double-checked the mower deck and found that they had not installed one of the zerk fittings for the flail axle. I am disappointed that the dealership will take your money but not do their diligence in delivering a quality, finished product.


Mower runs well though.

A common complaint on new tractors and implements, poor dealer final assembly. I have a John Deere with the auto connect mower deck. It usually installed correctly but not always. I finally figured out there was a missing bolt and it had never been there.

It's becoming hard to trust any dealer for final assembly or make ready. They typically are not mechanics or have the mechanical knowledge to foresee problems. They're given directives to do something without knowing why or how. My ZTR had the ROPS mounted backwards and one of bolts on a transaxle broken off in the housing. The ROPS wouldn't fold up and lock. How hard would that have been to figure out? And why would they not fix the broken bolt? It was dripping oil. I think the transaxle had a factory update on my model, so it was probably done pre-delivery. They sold it with the defects and made no mention of it.

I removed the transaxle and was able to remove the rest of the bolt. Fortunately, it was 1/4-20 which I had plenty of and the gasket was still usable. That's when I found out about the update. The part didn't match the manual.

Long ago I bought a snow blower from a local dealer. Got it home - hooked it up - off I went. Didn't take long - snow was piling up in front of the blower. There was a missing shear bolt on the blower. Small thing but I wondered if they had checked anything on that unit.

Posted from Central Finland. all. Gotta get chains for the front tires but this 26 9+9 keeps up with most tasks... at least until the snow gets above 2 feet.
