CC 2186
This is very disappointing after spending some $1,200 on a brand new CC 42" snow blower from the dealer. I just installed it today on my Cub 2186 and when I engage the PTO, it starts to turn the blower but then stalls the engine. Checked the PTO belt and its on correctly but went on very tight. There's also very little to lubricate, besides the bearing for the auger and universals on driveshaft. The PTO belt goes from the PTO takeoff, through the idler pulleys and then to the pully that drives the gearbox that is connected to the driveshaft for the blower. Any ideas what might be the problem? It's like the initial load to get things up to speed is too much for the engine. But it a V-twin 18hp Kohler. Even if we're at 7600' altitude, by my calculations, there still should be about 13.5hp. Thanks! from Colorado Springs /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Is the engine even warm enough? Kohlers run cold so they need to warm up first before engaging the PTO...half chokes help it get going with the PTO engaged....

I have a Deere GT235 with their 42 inch blower. So my setup is not exactly the same but the same thing happens. Here is the situation with the Deere, which I have used # seasons now:

The engine is down on power until it is fully up to temperature. So I suggest warming up a bit longer. Then you need to get the moving parts of the blower warmed up. Like the other poster, I hit the PTO for just a moment to get it moving then hit it again and it takes off and there is no stalling thereafter.

Next . . . . the issus of belt tension. On the Deere the belts make kind of a u-turn around two pulleys to wrap around the PTO. If you have an arrangement like this it's vital that you set the angle correctly on those pulleys or you'll snap belts every storm.

My belt tension is set by a spring and lever. Is yours the same? Make sure the spring is not set too tight as that will aggravate the stalling.

How stiff is the blower? Anything binding or maybe lube that's too stiff with the cold temps?

If the lube is a gear oil, I would replace with a syn as they do not turn to molasses come winter.

OK, I feel stupid.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I forgot that even with the Parking Brake on, that you need to be in the seat for the PTO to work. All along I was trying to engage the PTO will standing beside the tractor to see if the driveshaft was spinning. So by accident, when I had my son pull the PTO switch while I watched, no problem turning the auger.

Boy do I feel stupid. But the good new is that I'll get a chance to try the snow blower out tomorrow and see how it performs compared to my JD 828D walk behind.

Thanks again to all who responded to my original post.

Hey Cobiker,
We've all done at least one or two of those.
Glad you're back in business!

That is pretty funny!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think pretty much from most accounts, you'll find it does a great job. But, I would start the tractor and let it run a good 5 minutes to get close to operating temperature.
