John Deere, cub cadet, Terramite 4
Hi everyone I just purchased a 1976 Terramite 4. It is a pretty neat little tractor. There seems to be very little information on this specific model, so I'm here to learn. One thing that stuck out was the terrible turning radius. I was wondering if anyone has modified it? The steering stops consist of a stop on the spindle and one on the axle. I'm wondering if the spindle side could be ground down equally on each side to allow more travel? I would imagine if it turns too tight it would become dangerous, but I would like a bit more travel. These stops are very thick so I do not think removing some will weaken it too much. If anyone has any pointers or reasons I should/shouldn't do this please let me know thanks!

I have a Lodi clone of a Terramite TC5. It uses many of the same components. If I disconnect the linkage from the steering arm. I can turn the wheel far enough around that the crank gear rotates off the worm inside the steering box. It is easy to reengage by grabbing the arm rotating it up while turning the wheel. Because of my experience, I would worry that modifying the stop might lead to a loss of steering if cranked too far around.

Thank you for the reply that is the exact type of info I was looking for. Would you mind posting a pic of what your spindles look like? I'm not sure if they different or if they are the same as on my t-4

I'll grab some pix tomorrow. One other thing to mention is that my steering box housing is broken and missing 1/3rd of the bottom. I suppose it is possible that the missing house acted like an internal stop which would then be the root cause of my phenomena. Or perhaps maybe not.

The box is a Ross type box similar to those used on Cub 185 Lo-Boy. Mine has T125994 stamped on the cover.

Thanks again, im also seriously thinking about adding either a John Deere 400 power assist system or a John Deere 420 power steering system. I have both full sets it's just a matter of making it work. I would then think the only issue would be my current stops

I thought about power steering as well. Figuring out how to break into the charge pump would be the key for me. Are your Deere set-ups the steering column assist type or a steering cylinder type?

How about posting a picture of your Terramite for the future internet searchers?

The Deere set ups are cylinder type. I believe how they differ is the 420 has no mechanical steering linkage (fully hydraulic steering) where the 400 does but with a cylinder to assist. I could be wrong though. If I could figure out how to post a picture from my phone I would. I never use the computer to go on.
