Tractor
John Deere 3720
Just bought '06 JD 3720 with FEL, rotary cutter, etc, since it's my first new one, would like some assistance on what tools and equipment are a neccessity to have and own so as to keep it operating as it should. I'm going to order everything I think I might need at one time from Harbor Freight in the next couple of days. ANY help would be appreciated.

Big wrenches and sockets! Especially those with long handles to get leverage.

I would buy a good complete tool set with a ratchets, sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, allen wrenches, etc. Then add specialty tools oil filter wrench, grease gun, etc. as you go along. Most everything on the tractor will fall within normal size wrenches and sockets.

A good grease gun is very important, as is a tire inflation gauge.

FIRST and foremost.... Owners manual, shop/service manual, and parts manual. (The latter being EXTREMELY helpfull when used in conjunction with #1 and #2)

Think I'd start with the grease gun.;)

Then take stock of what you have for nut and bolt sizes on the eqipment and stock sets that will include these.

A good hammer/spanner in 6, 12,24 inch size can be handy.

Don't get too excited in having to own every tool ever made to look after your equipment. Many times it can be buy as you go along.:)

On the other hand we here could spec out everything you will need from Harbour Freight. That would be fun.:D :D

A socket set that has a 1/2" breaker bar and socket, and the sockets.. say.. 3/4 up to 1 1/8 at least.

A brass or copper 'maul'. Brass and copper are non sparking.. and also won't mar up cast iron or steel castings and parts as bad as a hardened steel 'framing' hammer.. or a sledge hammer.

A set of drifts or punches, including small ones for driving roll pins.

A good set of wrenches in large sizes as well. get the type you need for your tractor.. either sae or metric.

A propane plumbers torch is also great to have on hand.

A grease gun.. either hand type, pump.. or if you have rich tastes.. and electric or air driven one.

At least a 'pancake' or other small compressor at a minimum.. so you can air tires.. and use a blow nozzle to blow debri out of things.. or run that nifty air grease gun.. perhaps even a small 3/8 air tool.. etc.

tire pressure gauge

Any special torx or allen tools your tractor may need to do things like disassemble dash.. etc. set screws.. etc.

Other generic items like a white grease marker for marking leaks or areas of interest on a tire.. clean up rags, a good funnel that has a top and bottom screw on cover so it will stay clean.. along with at least 1 5g fuel can o f the appropriate color.

A pry bar of some sort... Tire spoons can be used.. though if you don't plan on breaking down tires.. and metal pipe will do, and it will also doube as a 'cheater' for that 1/2" breaker bar.

A bag of bunji cords.. and eventually.. I'll bet you will need some chain.. if not for trailer tie downs ( or ratchet binders ).. for other items.. like lifting with the fel..

A good mechaincal tractor jack. Even the 35$ cheapy TSC kind is fine.. and a good set of jack stands.. .. because you never get under a tractor that is supported by a jack, or concrete block.. only one on good cribbing.. or jack stands.

A handfull of lynch pins, roll pins, and hair pins to throw in a baggie int he tool box... brush has a tendency to snatch those pins off at bad times..

To this end.. a ball of mechanics wire or bailing wire and a set of pliers and an adjustable wrench int he tool box may be a life saver. A good size adjustable wrench can be used as a hammer or wrench.. in emergencies.. and the gas pliers are ok for cutting wire, and great for anything the wrench won't fit... A scredriver/nut driver with a few tps is also a good idea, as well as a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher somewhere on the tractor.

A cup holder, and a safe holder for a cellphone is also nice.

Perhaps a couple extra misc soft bolts int he tool box including nut and washer hardware, and at least one extra shear pin for the mower int he tool box. This saves trips back home/to the barn, etc.. to make minor repairs.. etc.

The list can virtually be endless.. however I listed most of the stuff I bought when i got my first tractor, and tried to list the stuff I carry on my tractors when I leave the barn.. etc.

Soundguy, and others, Now that's what I call a response to a call for assistance. Well done! Youv'e made me realize how unprepared I really am. I do have some of these items (air compressor, chains, grease gun, tire spoon, big adjustable wrenches), so it won't be as big a shock as I imagined $$. Thanks so very much to all that have responed to my request. I've learned so much from this forum.

A lot of folks here think Harbor Freight is a great place to buy tools, but I disagree. You just bought a top of the line tractor, and now you're going to buy Chinese crap to take care of it? I've always thought Craftsman's instant replacement of any broken hand tool was worth the extra you have to spend. They can make that offer, because their hand tools don't break. I have had a couple replaced and my core set of tools I got when I was 16 years old -- over 30 years ago.

Jeffinsgf, Thanks to you and others for the helpful suggestions. I'm a firm believer in good tools. Was compiling a shopping list and was also reviewing Harbor Freights website. I read on this forum numerous members that appear from their posts to be comfortable with Harbor Freight. I know what you mean about Craftsman Tools, very good policy. My BIL swears by them. There are a few tools Soundguy mentioned that I'm not familiar with. I will do some more "looking" and if I can't figuire them out, I know a good forum with alot of answers. Thanks! Most all of you are just great and I, for one, appreciate all that you do to assist anyone with a problem, question or concern. Keep up the good work. This website is becoming an addiction, sorta like coffee first thing in the morning kind of thing.
