NH T1110 and a 12 inch single bottom plough

Hi all

It has been a while since I have posted. I am looking to plant a large garden on about an acre of land. I have a NH T1110 tractor and was wondering if anyone has used one to pull a single bottom moldboard plough? Any info or tips would be appreciated.

It should handle it fine. Straight line plowing, after the first run do the second with the front and rear tires running in the furrow you just created. Do the garden like that and adjust your plow to get it where you want. Youtube has some great plowing videos.
You'll need something to break up the sod after it is plowed. I use a disk harrow.
Watchout for going to deep with the plow. If I do - I get rich gray clay. I try to stay above that!

Turning new land with a 12" single bottom plow will be easy with your NH T1110 tractor. You will find the standard Position Control useful when plowing.

You will need a plow sized specifically for subcompact tractors. Though you have a standard Category 1 Three Point Hitch, the frame of a standard moldboard plow is too long and will collide with tractor frame with a lot of inertia. Standard plows are designed around 12" ground clearance. Your T1110 has less than 8" ground clearance.

I suggest you consider a PTO powered roto-tiller in lieu of a plow and disc harrow two implement combination. I do not think your 1,500 pound tractor can pull a Disc Harrow heavy enough to be effective at smoothing plow furrows. You may wish to plow, then smooth furrows with the roto-tiller, which will decrease the "breaking" load on the roto-tiller.

Another alternative if ground is not too hard nor too rocky, is a spring-protected Field Cultivator in lieu of a plow and disc harrow. You can pull a four tine, possibly a five tine model with 28-horsepower. You would have to discuss potential to clear ground contact with <8" ground clearance with the vender.


Do not plow so deep that you mix infertile subsoil into relatively fertile Top Soil.

Here is a NH 1329 pulling a plow - smaller tractor than yours.

Here is an interesting Craigslist ad- Charlton, Mass. (west of Worcester, MAss.) he used a Ford 1700 which is slightly smaller than yours. 2 bottom plow and I see a harrow in the corner of the pic.

I used to plow (1 single bottom plow) with my 1948 8 hp Farmall Cub. I also used to harrow with it using this International harrow (pic from online) You can set the angle of the disks for the amount of bite you want. It did really well.

When I got my TC30 I used that for plowing and disk harrowing. It was extremely easy for my 30 hp tractor. I did a few passes with the harrow until I liked the way the dirt looked. Then I planted. (I also use the harrow to recondition my gravel driveway when it gets grown in with grass,)

I roto till now with a 5' tillovator from agriworld that I bought online and had delivered. The rototiller is a little harder on the tractor, but mostly because I am doing it at a higher rpm.

This is a Farmall Cub with the type of International plow I have.

I like this plow. It has a sprung mounted arrangement that bolts to the drawbar. It is raised and lowered with a chain to the top link. The angle/depth can be be adjusted on my TC30 by raising and lowering the drawbar. With this plow I can plow in circles if I want to.

They ran 2 and 3 bottom plows with less horsepower than that. It was slow but sure beat a mule in the 1920s. A lot depends on your soil and as already mentioned, you don't need to bury the plow to get a good plot. It's the work you put in after that counts.

Thanks very much for the advice. I have about 15 inches of tops soil before I hit the clay. It was farm land 30+ years ago. I have a 50 inch tiller but wanted to turn the soil before hand. Learning a lot in a short time about farming.
