Does this make any sense?

The HST drive does not work when the clutch is depressed on the B2920!

Released the clutch and bingo! Is this a safety feature?

I thought the clutch was for the pto engagement only

Come'on now, this isn't funny...

That is the way it is. On the "B"-s the clutch disengages the drive to the PTO(s) and the wheels. I don't know if that is for safety or not. It does so I guess that the drive is not engaged while shifting from Low-Med-Hi. The independent PTO stays on while the clutch is depressed, the live will not.

On my B1750 HST the clutch is used when engaging the PTO, when switching between 2WD and 4WD and also when switching between high-range and low-range. I gather the high/low range selection is just a mechanical drive gear that changes how the power coming out of the HST is applied to the wheels. Just like a manual car you need to disengage the engine with the clutch to change gears but in this analogy the HST drive is the "engine".

It came to me as a drastic alteration from my previous experience with a BX. No clutch on the BX. I hope the clutch is a better system on my B2620 or in your case 2920 but it seemed odd going back to a clutch system on an HST.

Granted I haven't had a real tractor for very long, but I can't figure out why you would want to operate the HST drive with the clutch depressed. I'm imagining you want to stop a pto driven implement briefly to reposition the tractor? If so, disengaging the PTO is inconvenient?

Depressing the clutch disengages all power to the drive train, including the HST, PTO, HI-LO, 4wd etc. The HST will not operate with the clutch depressed.
It's like a car....no clutchy, no movey :D

Yep, I get all that. Now why is that a problem? That's what I don't get.

The clutch cuts off engine power to the transmission. Not a safety feature, it's a clutch feature.

Can I ask why you thought otherwise?

Disengaging the hydro with the clutch is a nice feature when starting the unit in colder climates!:D

I would guess this is an evolution of tractor design. Over the years the B series had gear and hydro and the L series have gear, Glide shift and hydro. It is probably just as simple to mount the engine up to a bell housing and clutch and then insert what ever transmission and PTO type inbetween. Now the BX tractor were designed fromm the ground up with one tranmission type and just have a drive shaft from the engine to transaxle eliminating the clutch (not sure but some of the newer Bs may be doing this also). Nice to have a clutch but with my L3130 with the Glide shift you do not use it very much either since there is an internal hydraulic clutch pack inside.

Have had a few hydro tractors (Bolens HT20), wheel horse 12hp hydro 1 range and there was never a clutch.

Clutch would only engage/disengage PTO!

Just thought that the "high tech" clutch block provided with the Bseries could stay in place indefinetly if not using pto.

NO problem...I'm sure that I was not the only one unaware of this feature!

I think that Kubota was cost cutting on the clutch system. I knew what I was getting into however when I bought my B2620. The three speed hydro was worth the inconvenience of the clutch system. The JD2320 and JD2520 have a hydraulic PTO clutch, and there is no clutch to engage when changing gears - it is still recommended that you lower the rpm and come to a stop before changing gears, however. The issue I had with the JD was that with two speeds on the hydro, I would have to change speeds constantly when mowing, or just be limited to mowing in low. With the Kubota, I rarely change ranges - I mow exclusively in mid. People have tried to justify the Kubota set up as if there is some advantage to this system over the hydraulic clutch set up, but if there was some advantage, then why has Kubota put a hydraulic clutch on the B2630 and B3030 premium tractors? Its a cost issue. For the money, these are great machines - if you want the premium features, then you need to move up to the premium offerings. For me, I couldn't justify the additional cost for what works out to be a minor inconvenience.

Clutch. Didn't we know sombody named Clutch... no, it was Flutch...(pronounced floooch)

I personally, like to be able to TRY to stop all operations with either foot, kind of like when you're having a bad dream and you wake up kicking the sheets...
