Bunyip says - and I paraphrase - "no matter how you secure your buildings they will find a way in". Two years ago - at the local bank - I had to go into the vault area - over in the far corner - there, for all the world to see - a wooden Victor mouse trap.

I alway make sure all my outbuildings have a hole - at least 3" in diameter - directly to the outside - above this hole in large black letters - "EXIT" Ha, ha, ha

A few years ago I was out splitting wood and left an empty beer on the back of the pile. When I retrieved it a couple of days later tyhere were three mice inside the 12 oz bottle. They really must have wanted the few drops left in the bottom, showing that alcohol really is an addiction.

I do not deliberately offer mice a way in, or a way out.
I do offer them free food......but no "safe space"

I'm definitely not a cat guy, but after fighting a losing battle with the mice for the last 20 plus years I broke down and got 3. They were giveaways from a nearby farm and since getting them I wonder why I didn't do it sooner. As a side benefit they also get rid of the chipmunks around the house which can be as bad if not worse than the mice (at least during the warmer months).

My grandfather used to have rat problems unless he kept a cat. When he passed away and my parents moved down the problem continued. Then the landfill which was a mile away closed... The rat problem disappeared.

The problem is that the mice don't always stay inside to die. Still I understand what you're saying, and free roaming cats is another issue altogether. There also seems to be some question if secondary poisoning is even possible.

Even worse is flying squirrels, I had one land on my head one night in my camp.

Amen.. This is the brand I fight with. Little bastards get into the rafters of my house. I had the entire house resided, sprayed with foam, redecked and reroofed, along with foam. I figured that would keep them out.

Heard the first scratches in the ceiling last night.

Took all I had to not grab my shotgun and just go to town on the ceiling.

We went for months without any mice -- all summer and most of the fall. But then November hit and they were everywhere. I saw a pair of them dancing across the floor like a Chip and Dale cartoon. Have put out a variety of poisons which work but don't prevent.

Out here in Eastern Washington the subject came up at the morning coffee club. Noone has had the normal mouse evidence. I was out splitting wood rounds in the pasture yesterday and the dog couldn't turn up even a sniff of one around the piles. I also haven' noticed the usual gopher mounds...although those usuall y show up in the Spring.

That's because the rest of us who have been battling them all fall, decided to be humane so we live trapped and released them on some back road... must be the one that you live on.
