Gonna build a few of these if I ever find that "Round Tuit", thought I'd post the drawing if anyone's interested -

I do a lot of stuff using receiver hitch tubing, but usually the amount of slop just using hitch pins is OK - In my experience, mounting a vise is NOT one of those situations

The thing I like about this method is that you can set up a receiver drilled for hitch pins, and STILL use this method for things that benefit from no slop.

Warning - do NOT use this method if pulling out of the receiver can get you hurt...

I tend to beat the snot out of stuff (after I've made it shiny, just in case Terry or Sodo is wondering :D ) so I use heavier wall tubing than the HF hitch stuff - This is my steel supplier, I buy 20' lengths of 2.53" receiver tubing and (usually) 2x2x.250" for the inserts (look about half-way down the page)

Ram Steelco Inc. - Salem, Oregon | Steel Sales, Metal Sales and Metal Processing

Another trick I learned from another site - if you cut away the TOP of receivers about 1/2", it makes inserting HEAVY devices (my "porta-vise" weighs close to 100 lbs.) MUCH easier - you can REST the insert in the mouth of the receiver without having to line it up perfectly, then wiggle it around til it slides in the rest of the way. See the second pic. Notice the inner angle of the cutaway is radiused - optional but better IMO...

Anyway, feel free to "xerox engineer", comment (Not you Terry - Sodo, MAYBE  ) or recommend improvements.

Woodworkers - please do NOT try to weld steel tubing to your Swedish wood-working bench  ...Steve BenchInsert.JPGDSCN1110.jpg

BTW, forgot to mention - this is intended to mount UNDER the bench top, you can get added stability by pushing it in til the vise mount contacts the bench top and THEN tightening the bolt...

Currently sitting in doctors waiting room and haven't had time to scrutinize yet, but I kinda think maybe my feelings are hurt....:D Terry

Geeze Terry, I figgered feelings were fair play :D But if I caused the doctor visit, maybe a trip to your local Marine recruiter should be next

seriously, hope it's nothing major... Steve

Anyone tried cutting the insert diagonally in both directions? Each piece would have a point on a corner. Should take out the slop left-to-right and up-down both.

Put it in a vise, like the top drawing, then cut at an angle like the lower drawing.

Bruce, I didn't think that'd work til I thought about it - If you mean cutting the tube ONCE at a 45 but with the tube "balanced" on one edge during the cut, I think that would work REALLY well... Steve

Caught ya while you were editing - yeah, that's exactly what I envisioned from your description...

I have 2 vises and they are mounted on posts on old semi rims.
This makes them portable so i can roll them where I need them!

I know I was specifically asked not to comment but...I like these ideas. This is what Ive done in the past but I'll give it a try!

'Salright Terry, Sweet-talkin's ALWAYS OK :D - like your "two-fer" stand, those Whitney punches are great for lighter stuff.

One of my intentions for a semi-unusual vise mount is centered on the end of this (nearly never used) stand

1000 lb. Capacity Engine Stand

Not saying it needs repurposed, but it's been sitting on the mezzanine above my studio for the past 25 years

The other change it'd need is REAL casters, with 2-way locks.

Did I mention that I've no intention of EVER being bored before they "pat me in the face with a shovel"??!?:D... Steve
