No Till Drills for CUT\'s?

Does anyone know if there are no-till drills available that are small enough to be pulled by a small CUT? I'm looking for something in the 6' to 8' range that could be pulled by a small CUT ranging from 20 to 30 hp and could plant the seed up to 2" deep. Only other requirement is that is doesn't cost an arm and a leg. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Any ideas? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: No Till Drills for CUT\'s?

doubt that you find one that meets all your requirements, especially the price part. Any planting tool is Expensive, even for CUT.

Let us know if you find one though.

You might look at an aerator kind with a seed box. Those are around $1500.........

Re: No Till Drills for CUT\'s?

Thanks for the reply. After posting I ran a search (I know....I shoulda done that first). From what I see, I'm not going to be able to find it. It looks like no-till units require more hp than I'll have and like you say, are expensive. One good suggestion from an old post was to check with a county extension office or a local chapter of something like NWTF, Quail Unlimited, etc to see what they have to offer. They will sometimes have equipment like that for members to use. After reading that I remembered seeing a drill at our county extension office, but it was so large that I'd barely be able to turn it around in the 3/4 acre food plot I'm getting ready to plant. On top of that I'd have to convince my uncle to let me borrow one of his farm tractors, then drive it on the road for 20 miles to where I hunt. Oh well...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: No Till Drills for CUT\'s?

I have an old Oliver Superior 76 Grain Drill.. it is not a No-till Drill.. the price ranges I've seen are from $400-$600.. the unit is ground driven. It has 3 boxes.. one for grains.. one for fertilizer.. and one for grass seed.

I planted a new hay field w/ clover, rye, and K31.. I prepped the field and got great results. I've also used it to over-seed an existing hay field.. though it isn't no-till.. it still cut into the soil.(I mowed the field first) The coulters(disks) have a spring to adjust the down pressure.

I really like mine.. I can overseed.. just fertilize the yard.. make new hay field.. plant soybeans & other grains.. and I've read you can block every other seeder in the grain box (13 total) and plant row crops.

One note: On the old drills.. the seed/fert. cups can be rusted out.. they are replaceable.

That's an interesting and viable option. How wide is your drill and how big is the tractor your using to pull it? It would be great to be able to use it to overseed an existing lawn that was getting thin in addition to planting food plots. Thanks for the input.

Re: No Till Drills for CUT\'s?

I don't know much about no till drills, but I built a two row conventional planter and I know that I could pull it across my unplowed front yard and it would split the ground open, drop a seed and then cover it back up. Depend on the vegatation you have to deal with, a regular planter might work. Here is the link to the thread about my planter. Planter Thread.

Re: No Till Drills for CUT\'s?

Your welcome... I believe the grain drill is 8-10 feet wide.. my tractor is a 35hp.. but the drill could easily be pulled w/ a lot less. I've seen White & JD planters of the same type.. some don't have the separate grass seed boxes.. but grass seed could be mixed w/ the fertilizer if it didn't have one.
