So I broke my cable on the winch, the cable is old and has a lot of broken strands along its length and even has a couple bad kinks in it.

So I want to just replace the cable instead of putting a new end on it. I see I can order a replacement unit from Labonville but I've never done it.

Anyone have any suggestions on doing this??

Thanks

It is pretty straight forward. This might help. If your new cable doesn't come on a spool use the same principle. But unroll the coil first so it lays straight out on the ground. Hold the coil together as you unroll it. Don't let the wire come off the side like a spring or slinky or you be forever getting the twists out and might end up with a rats nest.

I don't know if your old cable is 1/4" or 3/8" but you might be able to get a lot better deal if you just get the cable from a local hardware store or logging supply outlet.

Anyhow - however you get the cable just lay it out in a straight line on the ground. My cable never came on a spool - it was "wound up" like a cowboys rope with a couple nylon wire ties holding it all together.

Come to think of it - I would imagine a replacement unit from Labonville already has the hook attached to one end. If you're not familiar with procedures for attaching the hook - its probably better to get the replacement unit.

And it's a good idea to spool it in whit some load on it so you get it nice and tight on the drum.

Hi guys thanks for the tips, I have the cable on order and when it arrives Ill open up the winch and see how the cable attaches and then follow your instructions.

So I ordered the cable on July 5th from Labonville and selected ground shipping, I wasn't expecting it for at least a week.

Well it arrived yesterday! overnight for the price of ground. Great service.

I have pulled the old cable out and the attachment point is simple, I have the new cable rolled out and plan to put it on tonight.

Pictures of the cabel attachment on the drum?

Phil - yes, usually the attachment point on the drum is a hole with a set screw to hold the cable end onto the drum. Or some variety of clamping mechanism.

Do not forget the suggestion made by Agvg to have tension on the new cable as you spool it onto the drum.
