Hello,

Well I did an oil chnage on my tractor tonight all by myself /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif and have a quick question about installing the oil filter.

In the manual, it says to turn the oil filter clockwise until the gasket starts to make contact with the metal on the tractor and then turn the oil filter half turn to tighten it.
I was able to do this without using any tools. I had to use a tool to remove the old filter though, it was so tight that the tool bended portion of the oild filter.

Now the question, is the new filter tight enough? I started the tractor and looked for leaks and there are none so I'm guessing that it is OK. Can this oil filter become loose after a while if it's not tight enough?

I'm just a beginner at this! Please bear with me! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I NEVER use a wrench to put an oil filter on anything. I know most say after the gasket makes contact, go another one-half to three-quarter turns. Personally I don't pay any attention to that either. I just put them on as tight as I can with one hand, and I'm not a particularly strong old man either. But I have been changing oil filters since before the first "spin on" filter was invented, and I've not had one leak yet. And, yes, after running it awhile, a filter wrench will be necessary to get it off again.

Bird,

Thanks!
I knew I would get an expert's advice on the matter here!

Thanks Again!

Don't forget to wipe where the filter seats and to put a little oil on the gasket.

I do it the same way Bird does and have had the same results for over 25 years.

I do what Bird does. Did it according to the directions when I was young and had one come loose to leak away 2 quarts of oil before I discovered it.

Always need a filter wrench to get it off. On my JD 4010, the only wrench I can get onto it is a chain wrench. Have to thread the chain up behind the frame. Why didn't they put a nut on the end of those filters like I've seen on some? Sometimes, I'd like to just try Supergluing a nut onto the end of the filter sometime, just to see if it'll hold.

Aah, yes, Lawnjocky, I always wipe the filter seat and put a little fresh oil on the filter gasket with my finger before putting the filter on.

I often use oil from the old filter gasket (oil leaks all over it while unscrewing it) and just mate it up with the new one and smear.

I've seen some folks kinda go overboard in removing the new gasket and smearing all sides of it with oil.

Just need to do one side.
