I also have an old place, some where around 1890 the house that we are in was built. It is not possible to find out exactly when it was built (records around here back then where not kept with the iron fist of the deeds office and tax man of today). In the upper field is the cellar and stone foundation of the original house, it has been used as a dump by the original family and I donot want to go in there to clean it out.
I do know that in 1932 the original house (that was rented out to a family member) was sold to that person for a pair of oxen. The deal was that they would use the pair of oxen to pull the house 5km, (3 miles) down hill to a place called Stanley Section then return with the oxen (and tack) to make the payment.
Most of the people who watched and helped with the moveing of the house are long dead but, I was able to speak to a few before thier death. It is amuseing to say the least some of the stories I was told about the family by a few of the old timers. Who by the way are relatives of the original family.
Long story short talk to your old timers, they are a welth of information (factual, gossip and just funny). You may have to go to the local old folks home, it is worth the trip.
If your cellar is in any way a worry to you fill it in, fence it, or any other idea that you can come up with but CYA (cover your ***) against lawsuits. it is your place do what you want and enjoy it.
