older bx2750 fan shear bolt problem

I just hooked an older bx 2750 snowblower up to my bx23. Works like a charm.
The auger shear bolts are easy to change, buts the bolt on the fan shaft is a problem. I picked a short piece of 2 x 4 and jammed the fan. On these models there are 2 tabs on the shaft, the bolt goes thru
a hole in each part when they line up right. This bolt has a self locking nut.
The problem is that there is no room for my big hands to manipulate 2 small 11mm wrenches in there. The nut and bolt heads are too close to the shaft bushing to allow the use of a thin walled socket. I'm thinking of using a regular nut with blue locktite instead. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks, Larry

I think your solution will work.

Personally, I use open end wrenches and it takes forever. Plus, you always need to do it with the blower full of snow that didn't clear and whatever miserable outside conditions you may have at the time!!!

Just came across this thread and laughed. I am new to TBN and have been reading through the forum for the last three weeks (got sidelined after neck disk surgery and stumbled across TBN) and saw your problem. I laughed because I bought a BX1800 in 2003 and think I broke every possible shear bolt there was until I figured out what everyone else figured out by now, don't try to snow blow a rock driveway until it freezes a little. Anyway, I always like to be prepared, so I had a batch of impeller shear bolts and auger sheer bolts on hand, but found that the Kubota impeller bolts were exactly as you described them, small, awkward, I liked the self locking nuts, but what I really noticed was that they made the bolts about an inch longer than it really takes to get the two plates together and functioning? I really think some engineer at Kubota is still sitting around laughing about it. I ended up buying more shear bolts and have now cut off enough of each bolt so that it does the job without spending the day knuckle busting those things on. I have a separate problem with the auger shear bolts and it looks like I'm not alone. It's been miserable, when one shears, to line up the auger shaft and underlying shaft to find the sheared bolt and punch it out easily. There seems to be about a quarter inch play on both auger assemblies and of course the sheared pin is difficult to see with all the grease on the inner shaft. I've had days where the sheared bolt fell out and I've had more days where it's been a 30 to 40 minute job....usually when it's below zero with a 20 mph wind coming up the drive. Wondered if you've had that same problem with the Auger bolt change outs? Dyer, retired
