Opinions on 2023 ZD1211

Guys, I’m looking at replacing a Bad Boy Outlaw XP with 72” deck, 36 HP Vanguard engine with a ZD1211. My local dealer has a 2023 with 90 hours on it and they’re asking just under 15k for it. I asked why someone would have traded a machine like that with so few hours and the salesman said that the owner had a problem with the fuel system and decided to just go back to a gasoline based model. He said that they flushed the fuel system and replaced the filters, and all is good. There’s a year of warranty left.

So, my thoughts are that the owner wasn’t used to a diesel mower and probably filled it with gasoline and ran it. If that’s the case, it probably wouldn’t have run for long, and it’s unlikely there would be any internal damage. I can tell you it fired right up and ran perfectly. What do you guys think? Am I overthinking this?

See if the dealer can elaborate a little more, but I would think you guessed correct. Nice mower, I would snatch it up.

If you have been cutting with a 36HP gasoline engine mower I'm not sure you will be satisfied with the power of the 1211. They are good and they're strong but they ain't 36HP. If it was run with gasoline it would have a new engine in it. They won't run long on gas. As for the 15K, I bought one 2 years ago and paid just under 17K for it.

They are nice mowers, but I would see if I could get it down some. MSRP off the website is $19,999 with a 60" deck. Taking off 15%, which is about what my dealer does, is $17K.

So I have an ex-nephew by marriage that is a service manager for a kubota dealer and he ran the serial number for me. The unit is under warranty until May 2025. The service that was done to it was to drop the tanks due to contamination and to replace the fuel pump & filters. They’ll only drop the price $500, so that’s where I’m at now. I just went pick it up to demo it. We’ll see.

Okay, I just spent the past 45 minutes on it. It’s not even a close race compared to the Bad Boy. Even though it’s 25 HP versus 36 HP, it didn’t lug down near like the Bad Boy and the cut is so much better. I think my decision is made. Anyone want buy a 2017 Bad Boy Outlaw XP with less than 450 hours?

Congrats on the new mower. Coming from a 36hp gas machine, you're going to really like the 0.84 gallons per hour on the ZD1211.

That is one of the primary reasons for buying a newer machine. I couldn’t swing the cost of a diesel 7 years ago when we were getting ready to build the house. The other reason is that the Bad Boy is 7 years old, and unlike gravely, kubota, and Deere, I don’t know what the chances are that I’ll be hung out to dry for parts availability down the road. I have to say though that, so far, they’ve been good.

And just for those that say without pics, it didn’t happen, I’ll try to get some tomorrow.

You are right. The Bad Boy runs through about 2.5-3 gallons per hour, and I run non-ethanol.

I know that without pics, it didn’t happen, so I’ll do what I can to get something uploaded tomorrow.

The 1211 is a nice machine. I really like mine. I love the foot controlled deck raise and lower. I still think they are asking too much for it but if it's what you want go for it.
