I found a nice looking JD 2640 on Craigslist with the following description:

John Deere 2640 with Hi/Lo transmission. New engine, new clutch, new pto clutch, new shifter, two new batteries. This tractor is in excellent condition and is field ready.

I have not seen the tractor in person, but talked with the seller today. He explained that the engine is not new, but was rebuilt because of a noise made by the counter balance shaft. While they were in the engine he decided to replace the clutch, pto clutch and shifter. He states he is selling the tractor because he is downsizing his haying operation.

Any opinions on buying this tractor and what I should look for when checking it out?

All comments are appreciated!

That's a good looking 2640! I've seen much much worse ones going for $8500+. It looks straight, don't see any leaks in the pics, canopy is in good shape. Main thing I would see that is gonna cost ya a pretty penny is replacing tires sooner then later. I'd guess the back has about 30% and the fronts about 35%. If the price is right and it's just as nice in person and runs good I'd lay my money down for it!

RollingsFarms, thanks for your comments and opinion. Since my original post I have learned, from the serial number, that this tractor was manufactured in late 1977. Although this is a good looking machine that has had substantial work done on the engine and other components, it remains a 25 year old tractor that could have a major problem at any time. The seller is asking $10,000, which should leave significant wiggle room for negotiating.

Do any of you have other opinions on buying this tractor? I don't want to pass up what may be a good deal, conversely, I don't want to buy a money trap!

Thanks for any thoughts from you with more experience.

That does seem steep for this tractor w/ out a loader. But if as clean as pictures look could be appropriatly priced. You did not mention tractors hours, that can be usefull even if recent engine and clutch work. Also would be curious to know if a fiber or ceremic disc was used for traction disc. The ceramic version is very aggressive and in the hands of inexperienced operator you could find yourself buying a new clutch along w/ a new flywheel. The fiber disc was much more forgiving, either way if oem parts where used this was an expensive proposition. Very good tractor for haying operation and if that is all it has done than it hasn't been worked to hard most likely.

From the pictures it looks like it has the std front axle, not suitable for a loader. The HD front axle has two rows of bolts. HI-LO trans is expensive to repair, been there done that on the 2030
