Oxy/acet tank ownership transfer

Probably varies by state, but i anticipate eventually selling my mid sized oxy/acet tanks. i bought them outright in mid 70'5 & still have ownership papers
i will eventually sell them, but not sure how the ownership transfer is made & if it will be honored by a supplier.

some companies only fill their company bottles. what is your experience of tank sales, suggestions? they have been honored & tested through the years by local companies w/my paperwork. tried calling them, they really are clueless about the subject.. thx in advance

Here in idaho, they simply swap out tanks. They dont sell them as far as i know. I know i found a large, empty mig gas tank at an old storage unit we were clearing. Itook it to gas supplier and did a swap out for a slightly smaller tank, full of gas. No papers needed.

If they do sell the tanks, i e never run into it and ive been getting allsorts of gas tanks filled over the years.

Yeah, I think everyone just swaps them out. Probably not efficient for every Airgas, etc. to have bulk tanks on the premises, there may be some OSHA rules too.
I have, however been asked for proof of ownership.

yes, swapping tanks is std, & i'm sure mine have been swapped over the years from various suppliers. however if i want to sell the tanks w/original papers, how does that work. my original question

Since you have the original papers, why not just write up a receipt saying you transfer such and such tanks as described on the attached papers originally bought by me, Big Bubba on Jan-01-1998 to John Doe on Mar-05-2025. Or something similar and attach a copy of the original bill of sale.

good advice. i had thought of a notorized bill of sale, easy sale for me, but would it be honored by a supplier? maybe it's too broad a question, & i should pursue in depth local suppliers on that.

I "own" three tanks, oxygen, acetylene and C25.... Do not have bill of sale for the oxy and acet, were purchases maybe 30 years ago and bill of sale (receipt) has disappeared same as dealer who sold them to me.... Possession is ownership..

C25 tank all I have is a copy of receipt whose corbon has faded to a point its unreadable.... Possession is ownership...

Local gas supplier has been more than happy to exchange them for the price of a fill..

This may vary wherever you live....

that makes sense, so it seems it's a local matter of suppliers. i'm sure that in medical & even aqua lung regulations of ownership are stricter. i just want to sell & want the buyer to be able to refill. hey, looks like gun sales are much easier, thx

I own ALL my bottles and I have all of them filled (not exchanged) as needed at the local Air Gas compressor plant. 6 120's of different gases and 1 dissolved acetylene that I exchange.

Not all of us have a "compressor plant" within reasonable range..... That is why we exchange....
