I need to paint horse fence we put up this april - the classic with treated posts and oak boards. I have acces to wagner power painter and/or compressor and pistol.

Now before I buy the paint I want to collect some information on what to buy and how to apply - I prefer to have all the doors open before making a decision.

I dont like the black asphalt paint - will proly use some barn paint or such; cant really use white because we would look like neighbours extension:)

Any tricks, experience anybody?

Obviously I can do brush and/or roller too - but I dont really feel like it - I would prefer to spray paint it.

Thanks for any ideas

I would recommend a 4 inch roller and a small brush for the corners. The spray will waste lots of paint and not give you as good of penetration.

Lotsa places make a latex fence paint in black and 'cresote' brown looking.. though i think asphalt will give you better protection.. etc.

For my short fence line, I used a 4" roller and some brushes, applying a semi-transparent stain that a recent Consumer Reports listed as best. Admittedly it's more for looks than long term wear, and will have to be redone in 5 years. Now, for the really long fence lines on 1 of my friend's farm, we thought awhile, and then put a portable generator (honda) in the pick-up, along with a modest sized compressor and 150' of tubing to an air gun with gallon reservoir (with 5 gallon tubs of the stuff in the pick-up bed for refilling). Kept the pick-up sufficiently away, and down wind to avoid overspray. Worked fine, with one person slowly moving the pick-up (and drinking a beer) and the other walking along spraying - reversing roles every few hundred feet. Yes, one wastes a lot more stain/paint that way, but hand brushing a couple thousand feet of fence line was just not palatable.

All the horse farms down here do that sort of a paint rig.. just a slow drive by and blow... some of the poor fellows do it on a jd gator.. and the painter sets in the back... It's kind neat to see a pale white mexican.. looks like he was in a snowstorm. ( no offense to any mexicans.. I'd say that 80% of the horse caretakers, grooms, and exercise personel at all the local horse farms are mexicans.. alot of the ranchers have a few mex cowboys too.. seem like pretty nice guys.. )

Well I would use latex paint and an airless sprayer. You could rent 1 or buy a unit for a couple hundred at Home Depot or some other outlet. You can spray latex without reducing it right out of the 5 gallon pail. Shrink the spray pattern and have your son follow behind you with a 4 inch brush. This is the best and easiest way to do this. Personally I would buy the sprayer, you will do it again at some point and I assume you have a barn. I wouldn’t paint it any other way.
