Partially loading tires with methanol/H20

Are there any corrosion problems with partially loading tires with a methanol/water mix? I know with Calcium you shouldn't and Rim Guard you can.

I was thinking about going the methanol route because I have a partial barrel leftover from when I was making biodiesel, I figure it would be a good way to get rid of it. I'm both unsure that I need to fill the rims or that I have enough methanol fill them at the proper ratio.

No, shouldn't be a problem. When properly loaded the tire should only be about 3/4 full. I've seen many, many tubeless tractor tires broken-down at our Co-op that are loaded with methanol that the rims looked brand new inside still (including mine).

ditto what skip said. .. and remember.. you just have to have enough methanol inthere to prevent solid freezeup.. slushy is fine..

I got it done yesterday, it turns out I had enough methanol to fill both tires with a 30% solution. That should get me to -15 degrees, I hope it doesn't get any colder!

I used a pneumatic barrel pump from Harbor freight that moves the fluid by pressurizing the drum to 8 psi, and a hose adapter from TSC to get the fluid into the tire. It was a little slow for 47 gallons per tire but it did the job. :thumbsup:

It will feel like an entirely different tractor with the loaded tires.
At least it did when I got mine filled.

The owner's manual for my Massey gives detailed instructions for the use of Calcium Cloride as ballast. I guess there's money to be made selling replacement rims.

And beet juice and methanol.
In North Louisiana, Dad never used anything but plain water for loading the tires. If it got cold enough to freeze the tires, it was too cold for open station tractor use so they sat till they thawed out. The check was, when they quit sweating like an iced tea glass, the ice was melted and safe to move the tractor. Here in Central Arkansas, I am thinking of doing the same thing.

it can get colder.. slushy is fine.. you just want to avoid solid block..
