I've had a lot of experience with pH meters, but none of it has been in gardening. I don't know if there's a difference between lab pH meters, and garden pH meters.
With that disclaimer, I know that Hanna makes good meters for labs. I've also used Corning meters. It seems the Hanna meters are a little harder to use, but they hold their calibration better than the corning meters.
I know the cheapest route if you're not testing real often is to just get some pH indicator papers.
Once again, all this is based on experience in a science lab. There may be a whole different world as far as soil pH testers goes.
