With the Missouri bow season open and early doe rifle season open the last couple of days I thought I would share my stand pics from the 2023 season. The Missouri main rifle season opens next month. These were all taken last November. The last couple of years I've started taking my camera out with me. I've found taking pics as enjoyable as hunting and gives me something to do in stand, especially if I'm looking for a larger buck that doesn't always show up every year.

I just freshened up the edges on my tools. Ready to hit the woods Saturday.

Excellent photos!
Thanks. Since I added the pond on the property a few years back we have seen more deer movement than anytime I can remember along with more daytime movement as well.

I enjoyed those pictures!!!

Do you get any really big bucks there? From their body size, they look a lot bigger then what I have here in East Texas. Our deer are tiny.

I think that predation has a lot to do with the size of deer around here. Locally, it has been studied in great detail, complete with population demographics and genetic analyses. Towards the coast locally, there are fewer mountain lions as the terrain is not conducive to very many mountain lions territories, resulting in in-breeding, and genetic decay. New genetic inflow requires mountain lions crossing 4/6 lane highways and populated areas. 30 miles east, on the other side of the freeways and suburbs, deer are 50-100% larger, with a large and healthy mountain lion population.

Deer populations in Pennsylvania and New York are just amazingly dense to me. I've never hit one (luck!), but I have come close a few times. After my first interaction with one that jumped up onto the road in front of me, causing me to brake and swerve to the other lane, followed by the second deer that jumped into that lane, even closer, causing me to swerve back into the original lane, I have always bought vehicles with above average braking. (I ended up with my bumper inches from the first deer.) We did lose a car to one, when the deer jump up onto the road from the unseen downhill side of the road in front of my wife's car. Unfair, as she is by far the better driver in the family.

All the best,

Peter

Yes we get a lot of big bodied deer as we have plenty of food sources here in NW Missouri with all of the cropland. Here's a few from our property.

One I couldn't get my hands on in 2022. Motion pic from my cell phone as I jumped him driving the tractor back to the pond. I saw him pretty often until about a week before rifle season opened.

Very nice bucks!!!! Isn't it odd how they will be out and around for months, then a week before opening day, they just disappear.
