I would cut the extra off. I just wouldn't throw it away. You could always add it back in if necessary with connector links.

Grainger Supply has them reasonable enough I think. I myself would probably weld the cut link but not everybody has that option. I watch for stuff like that on sale and then I have it when I need it. To me that beats wiring it up every year. Like my time/aggravation is worth something too. Each to their own!

Cold shuts or lap links would run about $1 each.. I usually use the lap links.. easy to apply and stay shut. Even repair the tractor cross links with them.. they hold up quite well for wear.

But not a great expense.. and agree with pmsmechanic.. wiring up long loose ends is a pain. But removing at least one cross link on Mo's chains looks entirely possible for a decent fit. But if Mo likes the chains that way, I've no problem with it. Just thought others seeking a better fit might like to know.

Here are chains that fit.. no bungee's or springs needed.

I guess i dont understand the issue with wiring up extra links. I purchased my chains in 2011, i wired up extra links then. I leave them wired up and never unwired them until i needed an extra link for new tires. It was a 1 time thing.

The chains I shortened had about a 4-5 cross chain overlap. What I did was modify a set of free chains from a small tractor to fit on my John Deere 955 when I had it and I guess that's how I viewed the op's problem. Tying up a few links is not an issue I agree.

My first snow removal tractor was a John Deere 400 with a homemade blade. Chains and weights were a necessity. Next was a 955 with a 420 loader. I made up a set of chains but never used them. I gave them to the person who bought my tractor. My 4410 has been stuck a few times but never to the extent that I couldn't push myself out of the snow. I've mostly had more than enough traction for pushing snow without chains and weights.
