With cold weather upon us, I read my New Holland manual for my TN70A. It mentions placing a cover over the radiator before starting so that engine coolant can warm up and then remove the cover.

Does anyone do this?

Yes, but I don't remove it.

I cut a piece of cardboard the same size as the radiator screen on my Kubota, except it has a 6" square hole in the center.

I pull the regular screen and insert this in it's place for the winter. I was spreading fertilizer with it yesterday and it warmed up nicely with OAT ~40F.

OTR trucks have thermostatically controlled shutters behind or in the grille to accomplish the same thing. When I lived in Michigan, it was pretty common to see people who had blocked off part of the radiator on their car or pickup with a piece of cardboard to decrease airflow through the engine compartment in winter to make their heaters work better.

Your engine fan is probably a simple belt driven item, not electric nor temperature dependent like in some newer cars and pickups, so blocking part of the air moving into the radiator from the front will help it stay warmer. Remember, the thing never moves through the air fast enough to create any serious airflow through the radiator like a car does. Therefore, the fan has to move enough air to keep it cool in the hottest climates in which the tractor is likely to operate. This is way too much air in a cold midwestern winter so it depends solely on the thermostat to allow it warm up. Covering the radiator helps it out. So do the side panels on the engine area.

I do it on my JD1010 for the winter and my old "B" has shutters to close off the radiator to assist in regulating the temps. Just keep an eye on the gauges to make sure it's not getting hot.

Shutters are pretty much a thing of the past on OTR trucks. Too many air-to-air aftercoolers in use which can't tolerate no air flow. Most now use fan clutches and winter fronts.

Aftercoolers? Do you mean the intercoolers for turbochargers or is there some other item out there I haven't heard of? It's been a while since I worked around big trucks.

Yes. For some reason, they quit calling them intercoolers.

I guess they cool the incoming air after it's heated by compression so the logic is there but that's a new one to me.

I was a little confused on the big truck thing for a few... all of mine always had winter covers and summer bug screens even my F-350 PS had those ( I bought and put them on) I need a set for my new cummins though...
