Plow Shear Bolts are shearing on new tractor

I agree with the others, it sounds like you're going too deep.

Share length does not determine plow size. To determine the size, place a framing square against the landside and measure out to the back end of the share. This will tell you how deep the plow was designed to run.

Share length does not determine plow size. To determine the size, place a framing square against the landside and measure out to the back end of the share. Half of this measurement will tell you how deep the plow was designed to run.

Edit; I was typing too fast and remembered I had to divide by 2.

Plowing depth should be 1/2 the width of the plow share, as a general rule..

Agreed. Plowing too deep just wastes fuel and machinery. Most newer guys tend to plow too deep. Six inches is plenty.

Careful with higher tensile shear bolts. Most small tractors do not have Draft Control. Without Draft Control, should the plow hit an immovable object in the soil, there is the potential for the tractor to go VERTICAL, pivoting around the rear axle, in 1/2 second.

Also agreed. the shear bolt is there for a reason. You could easily rotate the tractor around and maybe kill yourself or you could twist the plow into a pretzel with the extra force.

Ok so this is true if you are pulling a semi mount plow. If the plow is mounted on the three point hitch it will go no higher that the three point will allow it to.

Most small tractors will also be out of traction pulling a plow, so the back tires would spin before it picks up the front end anything substantial. But always be aware of the possibilities and safety things.

No force but gravity holds the 3-Pt. down. It can rotate freely around its pivot points.

As tractor weight shifts when plow encounters an obstruction, all the tractor weight shifts to the turning rear wheels.

Well, I pull three 14 inch bottoms with a 50 PTO HP tractor. I pulled a two bottom 14 inch plow with 25 PTO HP. I don't know if your tractor HP (40) is engine or PTO but the key is I pulled both of them at the proper depth. I have a video of the three bottom on my signature. (PTO HP translates roughly into drawbar HP)
If you are thinking that "as long as it's not buried below the top of the mold-board, deeper would be better" then you need to change your thinking. That is entirely too deep. You are breaking the shear bolts because you are asking too much of the plow.

Just my $.03. (adjusted for inflation) :)

Allenintexas--II watched your video and was shocked to see an L5740 pulling a three bottom rollover plow. I would think it would be too much for the tractor. are you added weight or anything?

So how does it pull? How much do those plows weigh and what kind are they? Any more info?

The plow is an Oliver 6241. I don't know exactly how much the plow weighs but my tractor snatches it off the ground with no problem. I have filled rear tires and 640 lbs of cast weight on the wheels and of course I leave the loader on and run in 4WD, In the video I was pulling at about 4.2 MPH and 9 inches deep which according to general wisdom, is 2 inches too deep for the plow.
I have a thread here telling the story of the plow, me redoing it to make it work with my tractor and all and one of the comments that was made was, "that plow will anchor that tractor". Well I guess not. I have gotten into some dry virgin ground that was tough but I have always been able to pull the plow at least 3 MPH. It actually works a bit better just under 4 MPH but I was showing off for the video. AS long as there is just a bit of moisture, I don't have any problems if I keep the plow at the correct depth. It has all new shares, shins and landslides so that makes it better too.

allen in texas--that is some serious weight on that tractor and that's what makes it possible. Does Kubota give a maximum amount of weight that can be added to their tractors?

I looked up your Olive 6241 thread since I love the art of getting old things rebuilt and going again. Oliver and White (generally same plows) are considered the Cadillac of plows being easy pulling, trash covering and reliable. That's a great plow that you have.

EDIT--in looking at those old pics let me comment again what a nice and classic plow that is. If I owned it, I'd never sell it.

I agree. That is a beautiful classic plow. Simple clean design.

Our roll over plows were Ransomes (English), John Deere and Massey Ferguson. The Ransomes was a piece of crap, and I always felt the JD and MF were too short framed.

Cool video,Allen in texas.
