A friend of mine has a Ford 9n, and I am thinking of approaching him about buying it. He has no use for it.

When last parked at least 5 years ago, it had no electricity going to the starter. Since then, it has sat out in the rain and snow in upstate New York. I do not know if the engine is stuck or if it has hydraulic or PTO problems. It has little rust, but the paint is peeling, revealing an array of white and gray and red underneath.

What would be a fair price to offer? The owner is a friend, and I want the transaction to be fair for both parties.

Most 9ns in this area sell for around 1800 to 2500 bucks....depending on condition. Tractorhouse.com will provide you with an approximate value in your area.

Hope this helps.

That's a tough one. Sat out in the rain and snow for that time and doesn't run. Plus it's a friend.

If it ran nice, sat inside and was in great shape it could sell for maybe $1600 to $2100 or so around here. That's about the same price as 25 years ago. Now, considering the condition I could see $600 to $800 or so, maybe a whisker higher. That's what I have seen at auctions around here.

Since it's a friend, you maybe need to get him to give you a price so it doesn't look like you're trying to hustle him. It would be nice if he could give you a number and you could say yes or no and let it be. It will be worth less in another year or two.

Going rate for non runners is $500. Plus if Tires are good and other options. Minus bad tires and stuck engine and clutch. Clutch and stuck engine are easy to find out before you buy.

How do I test for a stuck engine or clutch?

For the engine, press hard on the fan belt and try to turn the engine over with the fan.

Others ways to check for a stuck engine. Put the tractor in 4th gear, then pull it down the road until you're going about 10 miles per hour.....let out the clutch. If the tires refuse to turn, your engine is likely stuck. Could also mean stuck brakes.

Hook up a good battery to the tractor in question. Give the starter a go. If the starter engages, but the engine refuses to turn over, this is a good indication that the engine is stuck.

Hope this helps.

Well, you'll find out if the brakes are stuck before you get to 10mph. On my Ns, if the belt is a little loose you need to turn the belt and the fan at the same time to turn the crank, the fan pulley will just spin without turning the belt. You need to find out if the engine is stuck. If it is, the tractor is worth scrap price. Ns really aren't worth putting much money into in my opinion. It'd have to be a really really nice one to be worth over $2,000, so keep an eye on your repair budget. If the engine is free, the tires are good, and you want a project, it might be worth $600. Just realize that if you pay 600 for it, spend 6-800 getting it in decent shape, you still have a tractor worth under $1500. If it's your idea of a good time, then go for it otherwise, look for a better tractor.

I agree with kirk. Non runner with known issues, a max of 500, may bee less
