My tractor has the new hydraulic PTO engagement system that will not allow turning the PTO shaft on the tractor to line up the splines. So the only way is to turn the PTO shaft of the attachment implement to get it to line up. On the 15 ft woods mower that means I have to use a long pry bar on the second U joint to get leverage to turn it. Trying that and push in the coupling at the same time is very difficult. Is there a better way out there??

overrun clutch -- it's an add-on to the tractor side pto shaft that is a rachet affair - rachets freely in one direction - catches to turn your attachment in the other. sure made my life easier. you can get them lots of places - I got mine at tractor supply. Fellas here talk about one that is a quick connect - the one I got from tsc is not.

Thank you. Knew that there would be an answer ouit there. I had asked the dealer about and they had no answers.

An overun clutch is very handy, but they have specific horsepower limitations. Be safe and check first. As to why it is difficult, you can thank OSHA for that and the push/pull connection, and they plastic guards that keep you from greasing u_joints.

Might not be what you want to hear but if you shut the engine off the shaft spins!!!!

the shaft does not spin when engine is off. The dealer said he had the same problem as well and it was a matter of indexing the hard way until the splines line up. It would not be a problem if the implement was light duty so you could easily turn the shaft by hand. In this case the shaft is very heavy and turning three gearboxes on the 15 ft mower requires considerable effort. So I use a 36 inch pry bar inserted in the second u joint to turn a little and then try to insert. And so on until it slips in. The clutch idea seems to a solution for this.

A lot of farmers widows would have loved to hold supper the couple extra minutes it would have taken to grease the pto shaft equiped with one of those plastic guards.

Why? Anyone explain this "feature"?

Bernie,
Best guard of all is common sense, don't be around behind tractor with spinning implements--shut'em down-- pto guards cause false security. A guy here in our area nearly severed his left ankle while adjusting the sway arms while his rotary mower was running, but he had a pto shaft cover. The world we live in today is full of false security. The best guard is the one we all have-- I think-- is our brain, stop ,think and then procceed!!!!

Bob,

One of our Kubotas will allow you to turn the pto shaft only a quarter or half turn from stop, clock wise with tractor shut off only ,to allow hook up.
